Exchange 2007 restore mailbox failure
Iam trying to recover some data from a single mailbox on an Exchange 2007 SP2 server. I set up and restore a backup to an RSG and mount the RSG DB. I run a restore-mailbox command it fails with the following entry in the migration log: [5/18/2011 11:23:23] [0] [ERROR] Error was found for Test MX1 (Test.MX1@XXXXX.com) because: Error occurred in the step: Moving messages. Failed to copy messages to the destination mailbox store with error: An unknown error has occurred., error code: -1056749164 There is also two errors in the Application Log on the workstation the command was run from: Dumpster folder 'Deleted Messages' was not found in target. Failed to add dumpster folder hierarchy. AND The restore-mailbox task for mailbox 'Test MX1' failed. Error: Failed to copy messages to the destination mailbox store with error: An unknown error has occurred. This only happens on one specific mailbox; i can restore another mailbox from the same RSG. I have tried two different backups and tried to restore to two different target mailboxes but get the same error. There is nothing to be found for the two application log errors and the only answered forum question with this same error message is just plain incorrect. Since it only happens to one specific mailbox I assume there is a problem with the mailbox. What could it be and is there anyway to restore data for this mailbox?TBrennan

Make sure you have Full Permission on that Mailbox. Run the command and post the result. Did you tried to export the mailbox? what happens when you do it?Gulab | MCTS-MCITP Messaging: 2010 | MCTS-MCITP Messaging: 2007 | MCC 2011 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah | Blog: www.iExchangeRanger.com

Both myself another admin have Full Access permission to the mailbox and we both get the same error (regardless of the folder, even though I want the calendar I tried others once the problem showed up): Restore-Mailbox : Error was found for Test MX1 (Test.MX1@XXX.com) because: Error occurred in the step: Moving mes sages. Failed to copy messages to the destination mailbox store with error: An unknown error has occurred., error code: -1056749164 At line:1 char:16 + restore-mailbox <<<< -rsgmailbox 'User, Sam P' -RSGDataBASE 'server1\Recovery Storage Group\SG5MS1(Server)' -incl udefolders '\Calendar' -id testmx1 -targetfolder 'RecoveredMail' -baditemlimit 1500 + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (0:Int32) [Restore-Mailbox], RecipientTaskException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 3D4BF953,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.RecipientTasks.RestoreMailbox I am able to run an export-mailbox command on the current, live mailbox calendar.TBrennan

Good info from Gulab, i.e. I would go back and double check that you have set all the appropriate rights etc and also not sure what SP level you are on but this article references the error you are getting and says it was fixed in SP4 If you still have issues, check out Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp since it can open any Offline Exchange EDB so that you can then Browse, Search, Export to PST, MSG and XML or recover data directly to a production Exchange server (even a different version)Troy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

There is no SP4 for Exchange 2007. I always give myself full access to a mailbox before trying to do a restore, I confirmed I have it here, I can open and work in the users' live mailbox.TBrennan

1. Sorry was moving fast since I was late for a meeting, meant to say SP1 RU4 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951747 2. Assume you have already done this to grant full rights to the appropriate accounts, sometimes its good just to just to double check Get-Mailbox -Identity <mailbox-to-export> | Add-MailboxPermission -User <your user> -AccessRights FullAccess 3. Here is another one suggesting you may have an excessive amount of bad items http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/exchangesvravailabilityandisasterrecovery/thread/60b734c8-50d5-49dd-bd35-04712e4db9fb 4. Another thing to consider is are any of the users you are attempting to utilize part of an elevated rights group where you may be picking up explicit deny rights? 5. Lastly try killing off the RSG and recreating it. I have seen bizarre issues with a corrupt RSGTroy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

The servers are all on SP2 RU5 I ran that command and it comfirmed Appropriate ACE is already present on object I have tried increasing the baditemlimit to 1500 and there is a different error message when there are too many corrupt items (unfortunately, the link in your reply doesn't work) the user is not in any elevated groups I have recreated the RSG each time I tried a different backup set to restore from. The odd thing is I can do whatever I want with the users' live mailbox, indicating I have all the rights I need. However, this failure has occurred on two different backup sets for the same user and I could restore any other mailbox in the set just fine. I even tried to simply merge the recovered mailbox into the live mailbox and got the same error.TBrennan

Very odd, I tested both of the links and they work. If this has happened with several backups I would think the issue is with the MB inside the EDB and it needs to be moved or repaired. Have you attempted to repair the recovered EDB or to run isinteg against it to see if it can repair the corruption.Troy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

Hi, Please dismount the RSGmailboxdatabase and then run Repair on it: Tools->Database Management->Repair datbase. Then try to restore the mailbox once again. If the issue persists, try to restore the RSGmailbox to another mailbox: Restore-Mailbox -RSGMailBox "Test MX1 " -RSGDatabase 'Recovery Storage Group\Mailbox Database' -Identity "another mailbox-TargetFolder 'RestoredMail ' Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I have been able to restore a different mailbox to the same target mailbox and I am not able to restore the problem mailbox to any target mailbox. i dismounted the RSG but could not run the repair tool in the GUI. I ran isinteg with the mailbox test and it found 7 errors and 14892 warnings! I have not run isinteg on other RSG databases (i do at least one restore each month) but that doesn't sound good. I am now running isinteg with the -fix switch. The DB is 113GB so it will take another 8 hours or so to complete. I will post the results and whether I am then able to restore that mailbox.TBrennan

Thanks for the update, looking forward to hearing the resultsTroy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

The isinteg -fix completed and made 14813 fixes; there were no more errors but still a few remaining warnings. Unfortunately, I still can not restore anything from that particular mailbox. To summarize: 1)I can restore the mailbox from a backup from a few days ago and I can export from the live mailbox; this leaves me to believe I have all the necessary permissions on this mailbox and that the current mailbox is not corrupt. 2) I can not restore any folder from this mailbox from backups done a few weeks ago, I tried three different backup setswith the same results. 3) I can restore other mailboxes from those same three backup sets; it would appear the entire backup set is not bad 4) I ran isinteg on the rsg DB but had the same results I believe this user is simply out of luck; it appears his mailbox was somehow corrupt a few weeks ago and can not be restored.TBrennan

Yes sounds like that mailbox has some issues and RSG is unable to get to the required data I would definitely move that users mailbox to a new database ASAP to ensure the issue doesn't get worse If the data is important, you may want to check out Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp get a 30 day license, open the database and mailbox to see if what you need is viewable and recoverable Troy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

It appears this particular mailbox was corrupt during a certain time. I am able to restore it from a backup dated 19Apr11, but not from backups dated 30Apr11-5May11; I can restore other mailboxes from those same backups so the backups are not totally bad. I am able to restore it from a backup from last week though. Very odd; I never heard of a self-healing mailbox. I guess this thread will simply not have an answer; sorry about that.TBrennan
