Exchange 2007 installation on Server 2008 R2 fails
Hey there, I've been trying to install Exchange 2007 SP1 on Server 2008 R2, I've met all prerequesites for the installation according to the installer but when the actual installation starts it's aborting with the following Error Message:Unerwarteter Fehler [0x7B50B829] beim Ausfhren von Befehl '$error.Clear(); foreach ($lcid in (get-DsnSupportedLanguages)) { $lcidStr = $lcid.ToString([System.Globalization.NumberFormatInfo].InvariantInfo); install-Container -Name:"Transport Settings","DSN Customization",$lcidStr -DomainController $RoleDomainController; install-Container -Name:"Transport Settings","DSN Customization",$lcidStr,"Internal" -DomainController $RoleDomainController; install-Container -Name:"Transport Settings","DSN Customization",$lcidStr,"External" -DomainController $RoleDomainController; }'.Multiple ambiguous overloads found for "ToString" and the argument count: "1".Warnung:Unerwarteter Fehler. Debug-Informationen werden erzeugt: Unerwarteter Fehler [0x7B50B829] beim Ausfhren von Befehl '$error.Clear(); foreach ($lcid in (get-DsnSupportedLanguages)) { $lcidStr = $lcid.ToString([System.Globalization.NumberFormatInfo].InvariantInfo); install-Container -Name:"Transport Settings","DSN Customization",$lcidStr -DomainController $RoleDomainController; install-Container -Name:"Transport Settings","DSN Customization",$lcidStr,"Internal" -DomainController $RoleDomainController; install-Container -Name:"Transport Settings","DSN Customization",$lcidStr,"External" -DomainController $RoleDomainController; }'.maybe it's not the R2's beta fault but rather my own, so I ask you guys, hopefully I'll get to a solution soon since I really want to test the R2 / Windows 7 Combo in extend.Thanks in Advance

Hi,Windows 2008 R2 is in Beta & RTM version is not released yet. I wouldn't suggest you to install Windows 2008 R2 beta with Exchange 2007 SP1 in production environment and so far there isn't any supportability word, process or prerequisites published by Microsoft.However if you are just testing this in you non-production environment it is okay.Similar problem reported by many people that while running /prepareAD or during organization preparation of Exchange 2007 install,on Win2k8 R2it gives this problem and workaround is to use any other 32bit/64bit of Windows 2003/2008 (not R2) member server or DC to extend the schema, prepare AD and domain. Then install Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 Beta.How to Prepare Active Directory and Domainshttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224.aspxAmit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Hi. Yes, I agree with Amit. We do not have any official document on how to run Exchange 2007 sp1 on that OS version due to that Windows 2008 R2 is in beta version. We are looking forward to the Exchange 2007 sp2. So far, I recommend you not to install Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2008 Server R2 Beta. Regards, Xiu

Thank you guys for your quick replies, I guessed something like that, it's not an actual live environment, I just want to test the "whole package" together like MOSS and exchange and SQL before actually thinking about a migration, thanks anyways and by the way: does the new Exchange Server have similar problems?

Thanks all, just wish Id made a search like 6 hours earlier when my soap opera with R2 and Exchange 2007 SP1 began.... Seems like Im extremely late trying this too, posts from February?! Thought the R2 was just released.... You live and learn apparently.Have to say I find it somewhat extraordinary that MS releases an RC, which is not a BETA mind you, all the stuff from the final release is supposed to be in this thing, and it doesnt work with their own (only) collaboration suite?!Well, just have to get down to work tomorrow and change the R2 DVD in myHyper-V server to a Sever 2008 vanillaI guess./JK

I have found workarounds for the problems and was able to get Exchange 2007 SP1 working in Server 2008 R2RCand the final RTM version.To get the domain prepped you have to do that from a Server 2008 (non-R2) server to workaround the first problem.You should then be able to install everything except the mailbox role.If you get the error "Access Denied" and an error number of "3221684229", if you right-click on the setup.exe file and choose the run it in compatibility mode (I chose Vista SP1) then the mailbox role successfully installs and so far everything is running fine.Also my domain is running at Server 2008 R2 functional level and no problems with that either (so far...!)Here is a similar thread:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrdeploy/thread/4dc9ed8f-d78e-4eb0-88af-f25fb3e5e728Hope this helps some people.Robin Robin Wilson

Glad you were able to get around the issue, but I wouldnt recommend this to people. The benefits of running Exchange 2007 on R2 are nearly non-existant compared to 2008. Balance that against the fact your product may break with future updates and the fact its not supported by it's creator... not worth the risk. Yes true. I am just using a test environment so if it breaks it doesn't matter, well not too much anyway!RobinRobin Wilson

I was not aware of this thread until I hit the "access denied error" with mailbox role. I simply started installing Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 server and had some issues reading metabase and stuff, I thought I will just add a couple of IIS components (includes IIS 6 compatibility comps) and the setup ran just fine. Yeah, but later I failed with mailbox role on access denined (3221684229). I never had to do domainprep from a non-R2 server - hopefully not required in future as well.I changed the compatibiltiy level to Windows server 2008 SP1 and the setup is going on for a while, lets see if it succeeds. This is just going to be a test server so not going to be worried about support ;) I will share more details if I find something interesting.Do you guys see any issues when applying RUs or applying SP2 on this setup!

Hello KetanThere appears to be no way to get SP2 installed on Server 2008 R2.If you try to install it, it will tell you that installation is blocked and if you run itin compatibility mode it just keeps telling you a reboot is pending and you must reboot before the install.The new Exchange 2010 RC does however work on R2,although I have done something or something has got corrupted as now I can't access the admin console!RobinRobin Wilson

I found this on another thread...http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/09/15/452494.aspx This is not related. The fix mentioned here allows Exchange 2007 to be installed on Windows 2008 with 2008 R2 domain controllers in the environment. It is not support for installing Exchange 2007 on 2008 R2.

Well, I've just installed Exchange 2007 SP1 on Server Core R2. So far I haven't found anything that doesn't work.http://www.nullsession.com/2009/12/07/exch2k7-complete-install-on-windows-server-2008-r2-core/And NO, it's NOT supported.Best regards Joachim Nsslander IT-Expert, Knowledge Factory (http://www.knowledgefactory.se) MVP Cluster Member of Microsoft Extended Experts Team (MEET) Blog: http://www.nullsession.com

Hello All, Exchange 2007 SP1 with Server 2008 R2 SUCCESS!!! I have been battling this same issue for some time and just figured it out. All you have to do is open IIS7 Server Manager and right click to add server rolls. Make sure IIS 6 Metabeta is checked as well as IIS6 Management Console. If these are not installed you will get a failure during the initial prerequisite test. After this is installed restart. Right Click on your Exchange 2007 SP2 Setup file and change compatibility mode to Vista SP1 and make sure you run as admin or you will get a mailbox role failure during installation. I hope this helps. I have been banging my head against sharp objects for some time but this worked like a charm. Giggity Giggty! Chenzo

What if I already tried to recover Exchange 2007 with Setup /m:RecoverServer before setting compatibility mode. It gave error code 3221684229 Access Denied.What can I do now? Remove Exchange and run Setup /m:RecoverServer again?I run Setup /m:RecoverServer because I reinstalled OS on my server. But AD is ok on other server.

Thanks! After following all other advice - IIS6 installation, I was able to run in SP1 compatibility mode (didn't need to use Vista), and it worked.
