Exchange 2007 in Windows 2003 Domain Functional Level with Windows 2008 DCs
Hi,I am trying to upgrade my Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. The domain functional level is Windws 2003, however all the domain controllers / global catalogs are installed on Windows Server 2008.When I am trying to issue the setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions, I am getting an error saying that there must be at least one Windows Server 2003 SP1 Domain Controller in the domain. Is there a workaround for this?If I install a temporary Windows 2003 DC/GC, prepare AD and install Exchange 2007, will I be able to remove again the temporary Windows 2003 DC from the domain, or I have to leave it there until I get rid of Exchange 2003?ThanksAS

Are you installing Exchange 2007 with SP2? (I assume that it is not direct in-place upgrade because it is not possible..) Explanation: Exchange 2007 SP2 Setup fails if all domain controllers are running Windows Server 2008 R2 http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/09/02/452284.aspx Resolution: The fix for installation of Exchange 2007 SP2 with Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controllers is now available. http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/09/15/452494.aspxAmit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Hi,Thanks for your reply. The domain controllers are Windows Server 2008 SP 2 but not R2. Does the same fix apply?AS

Opps, I thought its R2, then it is not the case. Where are you running setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions?Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

I am running the setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions on the Windows 2008 x64 Domain Controller which has the GC and all FSMO roles on it.

Hi again,I found out that the media I was using was RTM not SP2.I am now using the SP1 DVD and everything seems to be proceeding fine. Thanks and sorry for the misunderstanding.AS

Hi,Unfortunatley I am encountering another problem. It seems like this exchange 2007 upgrade is not going to go as straight forward as I thought. I am now stuck in the setup /PrepareAD step. It is now telling me "The accepted domain xxxx.com already exists. Below is the latest log that I had during this error. maybe it can be of some help, I am noticing that there is a refernce to *.xxxx.com. Is there some known workaround that can be done? Thanks again[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] **********************************************[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Starting Microsoft Exchange 2007 Setup[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] **********************************************[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Operating System version: Microsoft Windows NT 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2.[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Setup version: 8.1.240.6.[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Logged on user: ABC\administrator.[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Command Line Parameter Name='nologo', Value=''.[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Command Line Parameter Name='preparead', Value=''.[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Command Line Parameter Name='sourcedir', Value='D:\'.[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] Command Line Parameter Name='fromsetup', Value=''.[10/8/2009 4:28:52 PM] [0] ExSetup was started with the following command: '/NoLogo /p /sourcedir:D:" /FromSetup'.[10/8/2009 4:28:53 PM] [0] Setup is choosing the domain controller to use[10/8/2009 4:28:54 PM] [0] Setup is choosing a local domain controller...[10/8/2009 4:28:55 PM] [0] Setup has chosen the local domain controller ABCDC1.xxxx.com for initial queries[10/8/2009 4:28:55 PM] [0] PrepareAD has either not been run or has not replicated to the domain controller used by Setup.
