Exchange 2007 email account name change
We run exchange 2007. Recently we had a name change due to marriage. We changed the lastname, and display name. added the new smtp name and set it as primary by highlighting it and keeping the old smtp address intact and changed the Aias. Now emails going to the old address recieve bounce backs. What did we do wrong? Should we have left the Alias untouched?

THis is known ! You must wait for some time to replicate this in addrerss book (offlien address book) because sender would be picking this user from OAB which keep old SMTP address. Wait for some time and then test it. Also if you can update OAB then do it and test. What about if you send email to this user from your OWA ?Anil

I will check from OWA and see. In the future when the need arises, should we even touch the Alias?

next time you can change the user name with the set-user comlet. after run the commands below to add a secondary smtp adddress for the user with your new alais so if someone sends an email to both email addresses the same user will still get it. $Temp = Get-Mailbox -Identity $Temp.EmailAddresses.Add("smtp:newemail@domain.com") Set-Mailbox -Instance $Temp

Hi again from DVUA, I got some additional info on this issue by talking to the end user first hand. After the name change emails from within our domain (internal emails) going to her maidem address get a bounce back that says "the recipients email address was not found in the recipients mail system. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you." However, external email (from the internet) bound for the same maidem SMTP address gets through with no problems. Anyone have any ideas???

Within Exchange a mailbox user can have multiple aliases associated with it. What I do is leave the old email alias and add the new one as the primary. Then I set a reminder to remove the old alias after 30 days or so. I found that this method would allow time for the user to alert their external contacts of the name change and allow email to be received at both addresses. In the case of internal senders not being able to send. The most likely situation here is that they are typing the address in the To: field and using the cached address (the old, removed address) to send to. If they clear that entry from their recently emailed cache and use the email by typing it in or selecting it from the GAL, it should work fine.

I was getting the bounce back so I deleted the cache for the email entry and then typed it in long hand but still got the bounce back. I do not see the users old email address in the GAL. Anything else I could try?

Hi Dvua, Can you move this mailbox into other mailbox store and then checck. Also its looking me some LegacyDN issue hence you change SMTP address. Can you check LegacyDN value in ADSIEdit. Have a look this: Auto complete, Reply-ability, I need my X500!!!! :: http://blogs.technet.com/b/mbaher/archive/2008/02/17/auto-complete-reply-ability-i-need-my-x500.aspx http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2005/01/10/350132.aspxAnil

Hi, Can you try to send the test email via OWA? If the problem only happen in Outlook, check the email address in recepient's "outlook properties" if SMTP and x.400/x.500 is updated address. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. If you view the users properties in the GAL, do they properly reflect the properties set in AD?

your problem is simple as i understand it. you have a user whose name was changed and now people can not send the user emails because the email address they have is different than server. to fix this do the following open the exchange management console right click the mailbox in question and choose properties click on email addresses tab click add type in the users old email address as it was before you made the changes and click ok(also remember if it is already there just make sure it is correct. click add again and type in what the user's new email address suppose to be after the name change. doing this will allow people inside and outside your organization to send emails to both email address.
