Exchange 2007 deleting mailbox does not free up space
I have removed about 20 mailbox (after backing to pst files) from exchange 2007 (windows 2003 R2 64 ) I have my setting for keep deleted item for 1 days Keep deleted mailbox for 1 day and unckecked do not permanently delete items until the database has being backed up Two questions 1) i still dont get any extra disk space after deleting mailbox 2) how does exchange know i have backed up the server (i am using nt backup) for point 3 to be valid?

Even if you delete mailboxes, Exchange will hold on to the space for use in the future. It will only be released when you do an offline defrag. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997972(EXCHG.80).aspx This is something that needs to be done when no-one is accessing their email.Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

Hi there, when you delete messages etc it frees up space INSIDE the Exchange database file 'Mailbox database.edb' but the file itself will not contract. This is logical as it saves have to extend the file as more messages get stored. There are ways to shrink the file but that is a drastic step and not to be taken lightly. If you are running out of free space on the drive is there anything else you can trim or remove? A useful tool is TreeSize.exe free edition. It will scan the drive and give you a listing of all the folders and their sizes and may show where you can reclaim some space. I.T. Manager International House London

Hi, 1) you will see reduce in mailbox databse sie if you delete mailbox's from DB. It will remove spaces in form of white spaces which will be deleted by online maintenance run by exchange or if you do offline defrag of DB (eseutil /d). 2) see the property of database , here you can see when full and incr backup ranAnil MCC 2011,ITIL V3,MCSA 2003,MCTS 2010, My Blog : http://messagingschool.wordpress.com

In application event viewer 1221 in all 4 database i have less than 2000 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. So running Eseutil /D would help ? sjumma I am using windows NT backup and check the backup i see its not backed up since January 2011 But i see updated files on my SAN Backup everyday Can that be a reason for my backup not really running how do i check ?

running offline defrag (eseutil /d) invalidates your backups and you must also take the database offline. perhaps a better approach is to create a new DB and move all mailboxes to the new DB and finally simply delete the old and empty DB. lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

i have 4 database each of 35 gb/10/8.5/18 gb Total about 70 gb but i am backing up about 200 gb Creating a new database and moving a mailbox may be about 50 or 60 mailbox I dont understand difference between transaction log file and data log files and how do i identify them ? They all start with 1) E000000FDXX.log 2) E00res00001.jrs (currently in use probably) WHich log file can be deleted. I use nt backup and run successfully every day but the database(from Exchange console property) shows it ran last in January 2011 can some one help ?sjumma

I use window NT backup and successfully backup database full on weekends and differential everyday But my database does not reflect that see below. Also my drive is filling up with lots of log file from because some of them have logs from 2010 [PS] C:\>Get-exchangeserver | get-mailboxdatabase -status | select storagegroup, name,Lastfullbackup,LastDifferentialBack up StorageGroup Name LastFullBackup LastDifferentialBackup ------------ ---- -------------- ---------------------- EXCHANGE\AAA AAA 1/31/2011 5:45:33 AM EXCHANGE\BBB BBB 1/31/2011 3:40:56 AM 2/2/2011 12:56:33 AM (logfile from3/10/2010) EXCHANGE\CCC CCC 1/31/2011 4:54:32 AM 2/2/2011 4:53:20 AM EXCHANGE\DDD DDD 1/31/2011 4:21:19 AM 2/2/2011 3:11:33 AM EXCHANGE-External\tempSG1 EEE Can some one help with a simple solution of how to get log file out of the dirve ?sjumma

Your backups seems to have stopped working, what's changed in your process? If you want to move your log file safely then see below. http://exchangeshare.wordpress.com/2008/05/22/move-committed-exchange-transaction-logs/Sukh

I came in march but i see backuping up 238 gb for all the drives of which c drive is 20 gb used (widnows) ;F drive is 35 gb used ( transaction logs) ;Z drive 180 gb (Database and log fiels which is getting full) It matches 238 gb file of my FULL database backup So why is exchange not seeing my backup ? Also when i run exchange log move options. with database analyzer it shows only 2 database out of 4 in list Note given If the storage group has Cluster continous replication (CCR), standby Continous replication(SCR) or Local continunous replication (LCR) it will not be listed I have moved the log files with no real gain in free space sjumma

If your database(s) sizes are still small as mentioned above and you're backup is still 200gb, create a new mailbox database (s) and move the mailboxes across to the new database(s). Once moved, you can then delete the old 200gb databases and configure a new backup for the new database(s). Test this. Sukh

My database is actually only 70 gbs with log files it becomes 180 gb Server StorageGroupName Name Size (GB) Size (MB) No. Of Mbx ------ ---------------- ---- --------- --------- ---------- EXCHANGE AAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAA 35.88 36742.14 49 EXCHANGE BBBBBBBBBBBBB BBBBBBBBBBB 10.23 10474.39 7 EXCHANGE CCCCCCCCCCCCCC CCCCCCCCCCC 18.01 18446.89 13 EXCHANGE DDDDDDDDDDDD DDDDDDDDDD 8.54 8740.52 3 EXCHANGE-RACKSP tempSG1 Mailbox Database 0 4.02 0 ----------------------------------------------------------------REMOTE So during weedays i can only take full backup for 2 database. SO if i take full backup of B & C (totl 10.23 + 8.54) will log files get purged for those 2 database? Has enayone tried it ? sjumma

Only Full backups can be taken. Log truncation will occur only after a successful completion of a full backup of a volume containing an Exchange storage group and database. Backup - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee221177(EXCHG.80).aspx Sukh
