Exchange 2007 cluster licensing question..
We want to setup a Active/Passive CCR Exchange 2007 cluster and were wondering about licensing for the two Exchange servers necessary to achieve that. Since the Passive node is not actively being used by client requests, does it require a separate Exchange server license? My understanding is that the two nodes act as 1 so there is no separate licensing for each node within Exchange Management Console. Can anyone confirm whether you can run two copies of Exchange 2007 enterprise on two separate pieces of hardware while only using one actual license, legally? Thanks Rob

You need a license for both nodes, as stated here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232170(EXCHG.80).aspx "In a production environment, only Enterprise Edition is supported in a MicrosoftWindows failover cluster; Standard Edition is not supported in a Windowsfailover cluster in production. Therefore, single copy clusters (SCCs) and cluster continuous replication (CCR) environments are only supported on Enterprise Edition. When you deploy Exchange2007 in a failover cluster, an Enterprise Edition license is required for each node on which Exchange2007 is installed." - Ilse
