Exchange 2007 attachment restriction - alert required in outlook
We have Exchange 2007 SP3 installed on windows 2003 server. I restricted attachment for all the users, MaxSend and MaxReceive size is 6MB. Works fine. My requirement is when a user send an attachment over the limit, Outlook should give alert or prompt a message before sending the attachment that "your attachment size is exceeded the limit" to avoid this unnecessary traffic. At the same when i use OWA it prompts/alert me "your attachment size is exceeded the limit". All users are Outlook 2007 users, Can anyone suggest to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance Alagar

As far as I know this is not possible by design, unless you want to write some code to achieve that. In Ex 2010 you could easly achieve that by using MailTip, so if you have a plan to move to Ex2010 in the near future, that's a good newsVincenzo MCTS, MCTIP Server 2008 | MCTS Exchange 2010 | WatchGuard Firewall Security Professional

Yes, I know this facility is available in 2010. If anyone can share the script or code, it will be helpful for me time being. Thanks for your reply. Alagar

1. "to avoid this unnecessary traffic" - What traffic are you taling about? 2. The message isn't sent. 3. You should receive a prompt saying that the attachment size has exceeded the amount allowable....something along these line. Some reading - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2222370Sukh

I would just google for it, but it is going to be a custom solution and could take a while to get it working as expected based on programming skills level you can rely on. In addition to what I wrote before, consider that the MialTip feature in Exchange 2010 relies on the CAS server, since you get the "tip" before any communication process in the exchange pipeline starts, as you can see in the MailTip Architecture here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd297974.aspx So you need just to upgrade your CAS server to get this feature. Unless you have a complex exchange environment, it could be faster moving your CAS2007 server to CAS2010 than writing a code, test it in all possible scenarios and deploy it after you make sure it works 100%. Follow the link below to have an overview on how to move the cas role form 2007 to 2010: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/11/20/3408856.aspx Vincenzo MCTS, MCTIP Server 2008 | MCTS Exchange 2010 | WatchGuard Firewall Security Professional

Let me explain the unnecessary traffic..... We have multiple branch offices with different line speed but exchange mailbox is centralized. Any big attachment, the user is sending/receiving is an issue for that particular branch. Lets consider an attachment of sending 6MB in my present situation the mail is going to the mailbox server then gives the undelivered mail. I just want to avoid this traffic.... Alagar

1. I dont think you have applied the restrictions properly. I would read the following and check. - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124345(EXCHG.80).aspx 2. You should not be able to send the message if the restrictions are in place. 3. It would be pointless to send the message generate the traffic across your WAN then get an NDR.Sukh

Hi, From your description, I understand that you had set the restricted attachment size (MaxSend & MaxReceive) for all users in your organization. In the OWA, you will receive the alert “Your attachment is exceeded the limit”. However, there is no alert in the Outlook client. As we know, this configuration is on the Exchange server side. There are four limits included: Message Header Size, Message Size, Attachment Size and Recipient. Please follow the Sukh828’s suggestion to verify that this setting is configured properly according to the link below: Title: Managing Message Size Limits URL: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124345(EXCHG.80).aspx Yes, just like you have mentioned this feature is available in Exchange server 2010 with the MailTip Outlook 2010. If this configuration is set properly on the server side, Outlook 2007 users are unable to send email larger than the Size Limits. From your description, it seems that Outlook 2007 users are able to send out the email over the Size Limits. So have the users received any message or warning such as the NDR? And let me know how many Internet-facing CAS servers in your organization? Please make sure that this setting had been applied to all the Internet-facing CAS servers. There are couple checks and balances performed to ensure messages over the size limits or mailboxes over quota are not sent. They are performed at the client level in Outlook as well as the information store in order to preserve resources such as bandwith and server processing. These implementations were done back in Exchange 2003 post sp2 and outlook 2003 sp2. Outlook will query the IS store before it sends and will not send the attachment if it exceeds the limit or above their mailbox quota. Outlook will spit back "The attachment size exceeds the allowable limit" If your'e not getting this, make sure your Outlook clients are fully patched with service packs and post roll ups.
