Exchange 2007 and SP2
Hi all Quick question as I plan for applying SP2 to my Exchange 2007 Servers, all 12 of them are in 6*2 node SCC Clusters. Does anyone know if there are implications for applying SP2 to a passive node, then moving Exchange onto it, and then moving Exchange back to the non-patched node? i.e I generally patch my passive nodes, move Exchange onto it, and if there are then any issues I fail it back to the non-patched node. But, does moving Exchange onto an SP2 node and then back to an SP1 node cause any issues? If so, any thoughts on how to approach such an update? Tom

Yes, you need to read the release notes for how to apply SP2 to a cluster. Also be aware that Exchange 2007 SP2 has a schema upgrade, so you should evaluate whether you need to do a schema prep, forest prep and domain prep before installing it on the first server. Here is an article on the supported approach: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691226(EXCHG.80).aspx Tim Harrington - Catapult Systems - http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com

Thanks guys, I gather from reading this article then that you MUST upgrade both the passive and active nodes at the same time (more or less i.e not seperated by a few days). If not, well you cant fail back to an un-servicepacked node anyway.

you are correct. update them both without delay. Make sure you update your CAS and HUB before you update the MB roles. As Ed mentioned, there is a schema update with SP2.Tim Harrington - Catapult Systems - http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com
