I fixed the issue myself. It appears that one of the Exchange updates broke it on our server. I had another lab exchange 2007 server that had not had the patches applied. I just copied all the pop3 config files from "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\PopImap\" on our Lab server to our production server and the POP3 service started right up and we have not had any further issues. I made sure to backup all the config files on the production server before replacing them. Grady

Out of curiousity, which Exchange 2007 update did you apply? Rollup 1 or Rollup 2?

Yes, if you copy the file from another Exchange server to the crashed Exchange, the service work. But that work at ONE condition: You cannot never open the *.conf file with wordpad or notepad. If you open this files only one time with this editor the services POP3 or IMAP crash. this means that files (popimap directoy) imported begun from an IDENTICAL exchange installation (same drive, same path).

That's reassuring to know! I followed the MS KB http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997690.aspxand that's now broken my Exchange server!!! Thanks for the info...

Same issue for me. Copied all the pop3 config files from a Pre-service pack server. Pop3 is working again. Thanks for the help, but this should obviously be a regular technet article.
