Exchange 2007 and POP3 clients
Hi,We have the following setup in regards to Exchange 2007. CAS/HUB on two W2K8 servers running with Network Load Balancing Mailbox on two W2K8 servers runing with Cluster.POP3 is enabled on CAS/HUB servers with the following:Bindings - TLS - Port 110 SSL - Port 995Authentication - Plain text (Integrated Windows.. ) No TLS connection is required.... When we setup the POP3 in outlook we use the following of internal clientsIncoming mail POP3 - Load Balancing IP AddressOutgoing mail (SMTP) - Load Balancing IP AddressMore Setting:Outgoing Server - Use same settings as my incoming mail serverThe user account has POP3 enabled under Mailbox FeaturesWhen we test account setting via outlook, it finds SMTP and POP3 mail server but keeps on popping up asking for the username and password box. We have checked the password etc and all fine. Not sure where the problems lies as i have read all articles regarding setting up POP3 and we have done it correctly. Any help will be appreciated.RegardsReg

There was a discussion about this I've seen with some MS folks where there's an E12 Authentication Bug when using Plain Text Authentication. I believe it's related to a certain character type in the password. Can you try using an alpha-numberic only password and try again? Or modifying the Authentication to not utilize Plain Text and try again? I'll try to get some more information on this bug.MVP | MCSE:M | MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator | MCTS: OCS + Voice Specialization | http://www.shudnow.net

hi We have succesfully configured pop clients with exchange server 2007.We have incoming server we have load balancing cas server and at outgoing we have hub transport server .check you authentication .Option 1: We have also configured a mapi pop client by which we create a mapi client and configured a another pst and set pst a default path fro the email , for that all emails are directly land to personal folder and you got your desired result.http://www.eggheadcafe.com/conversation.aspx?messageid=31260687&threadid=31260436 RegardsSyed Arsalansyed.arsalan

1. Try domain\user and the UPN and see if both fail.2. Change the auth to Plain Text Auth (basic Auth) and test.3. Turn up protocol logging if all else fails: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997690.aspx

Ok, so I found out more information about that bug I mentioned earlier. If you are sure you have Outlook configured for POP correctly and this is still happening, the bug is caused by using an ASCII extended character in the password when using plain text. Try securing your login or modifying your password as well as the suggestions noted above. Hi,When did the issue occur? Log onto incoming mail server (POP3) or Send test e-mail message?Additionally, please check whether this issue occurs when using Plain Text (Basic Authentication).ThanksAllen

Hi All,Thanks to all for the replies, sorry for my late one regarding the outcome.Firstly the problem is still not working..I will explain what I have done, maybe I have missed something along the way.1.Turned on POP3 logging as suggested.2.Tried changing the Authentication to Plain Text - same story. 3.Set authentication back to Plain text (Intergrated...)4.Have tried to logon using the different methods supplied in the posts: domain\username\exchange server etc - all failed.5.Changed the password6.The log comes up with the same +OK The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service is ready.,2009-10-05T16:09:45.329Z,,0000000003CE0BB8,2,IP Address:110,10.0.20.154:2236,<,USER '.......',2009-10-05T16:09:45.360Z,,0000000003CE0BB8,3,IP Address:110,10.0.20.154:2236,>,-ERR Command is not valid in this state.,2009-10-05T16:09:45.376Z,,0000000003CE0BB8,4,IP Address:110,10.0.20.154:2236,-,,LocalI can connect via owa internally to the account no problem.I have only restarted POP3 service as it's hard to restart all services due to 24/7 running (would I have to restart all services on all servers or just the CAS servers?)I have tried to connect internally using the IP Address and externally using our public DNS record which points to the CAS server. On both I have tried all of the above but no luck.I have tested on Outlook 2003/2007On external Test:The following errors occur when doing 'Test Account Settings'a.Logon to incoming mail server (POP3), the specified server was found but no response from server. Please verify port and SSL information is correct....b.Found incoming mail server (POP3), outllok could not connect to incoming mail server. The problem could be the server name or port or your server may not support SSL.On Internal Test:a.Log onto incoming mail server (POP3) Outlook cound not connect to the incoming POP3 mail server because the server did not accept your user name or password I know it's not looking great but your help is really appreciated.Reg
