Exchange 2007 Sp1 on Server 2008 SP1 fails at setup /preparead
Environment: DC: Windows 2003 Sp1, run inDFL and FFL 2003 modeExchange Server: Windows Server 2008 SP1 Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Credentials: Member of Schema, domain, and enterprise adminsHi, I am trying to install a new 2007 Exchange server SP1 onto a Windows 2008 Server Sp1 box in an environment that contains a running 2003 Exchange Server SP1 where both the 2003 and 2007 Exchange servers will be running concurrently. These servers are currently running in a windows 2003 domain SP1 running with a domain functional level and forest functional level of windows 2003. I have tried running the installation and everytime it errors out during the active directory domain preparation step. This seems to occur at the stage where setup /preparead is running for I have run /PreparelegacyExchangePermissions and /PrepareSchema successfully. The error according to the ExchangeSetup.log is as follows:[6/20/2008 3:29:26 PM] [2] User has enough permissions to update templates. Dear customer: The following are the minimum software requirements for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 servers. These software requirements are based on the core requirements for all server roles and then breaks out the requirements for each server role. Core Server Role Software Requirements The following are the core software requirements for all server roles: Windows Server 2003 SP2 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Microsoft .NET Framework hotfix 926776 Windows PowerShell 1.0 Hotfix 931836 For 64-bit systems, hotfix 918980 (FIX: The IRow::GetColumns function of the Exchange OLE DB provider unexpectedly returns error code 0x80010105 on a server that is running an x64 version of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=918980 In addition, all Exchange Server 2007 SP1 server roles require that the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service or Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service must not be installed. Please check whether you meet the minimum software requirements according to the above information. In order to better troubleshoot the issue, please provide me with the following information: 1. Send the Exchange setup log file to v-rocwan@microsoft.com for further research, 2. How many domain controllers do you have in your current domain? 3. On a domain controller, run the following command; post the result to the forum. Netdom query fsmo 4. On Exchange server 2007, open Event Viewer, right click application, save the log file as .txt file, and send it to v-rocwan@microsoft.com. Thanks for cooperation. Rock, All the requirments for the Exchange boxhave been met. I will send you the results of the exchange set-up log and event log. Our infrastructure consists of four windows server 2003 SP1 domain controllers running in Domain and Forest functional levels of Windows 2003. Two of the four domain controllers are in a separate active directory site. Exchange 2007 server will be installed in the root domain, which contains the schema master DC and will have no interaction with the other site. The result of running the netdom query fsmo is as follows: Schema owner: Kai Domain role Owner: kai PDC role: kai RID pool manager: kai Infrastructure owner: kai

Rock,The domain error ******eing in mixed mode was with the first installation. After I got that error I upgraded my domain and forest to windows 2003 mode, waited for the changes to replicate to all my other domain controllers, and re-ran the installation. I used the DVD to install the media, which did a verification test, and copies all necessary files to a directory i specified on the C drive. Last night I loaded .net 3.0 on the exchange 2007 server running on windows server 2008 and reran the installation with the same failure ******eing that it can't update the exchange templates. Note, I ran the servermanagercmd -i RSAT-ADDS ******efore I did any installations of Exchange.Thanks.

Dear customer: The full installation option of Windows Server 2008 must be used for all Exchange 2007 SP1 servers and management workstations. The Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008 is not supported for use by Exchange 2007 SP1. For all server roles other than the Edge Transport server role, you must first join the computer to the appropriate internal Active Directory forest and domain. You may need to restart the computer after installing the Active Directory Domain Services remote management tools. You will be notified at the end of the installation process if a system restart is required. After you run ServerManagerCmd -i RSAT-ADDS command, try to restart Windows server 2008, and check the effect. Additionally, I want to confirm the following information with you: 1. Are you running /PrepareAD on your Exchange server or your DC? If you are running on Exchange server, try to run on the DC that hold the five fsmo roles, and check the effect. Please let me know the result. Rock Wang - MSFT

Rock, I am doing the installation on a full installation of Windows Server 2008 that was joined to the domain before I did the Exchange installation. I ran the /preparead command on the Exchange server. I cannot run the command on the domain controller for it is an x86 windows 2003 sp2 server, which the preparead command fails saying that it is not meant for this machine or is not compatible.

Dear customer: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 stores all configuration and recipient information in the Active Directory directory service database. When a computer that is running Exchange 2007 requires information about recipients and information about the configuration of the Exchange organization, it must query Active Directory to access the information. Active Directory servers must be available for Exchange 2007 to function correctly. You can try the following methods to fix the issue: Added the Exchange server 2007 server name and IP address to the Hosts.txt file and then rerun setup. And let me know the result. Hope it helps. Rock, That did not make any difference. I don't think we are dealing with the problem at hand. Looking at the first set-up log I sent you, and every other set-up log after, exchange 2007 has access to the domain controller and has full permissions to do so. It keeps erroring out at updating the templates. Dear customer: In order to better troubleshoot the issue, I want to confirm the following information: 1. Check whether you install Active Directory tools on that Windows server 2008 successfully? Can you open ADUC on it? Connect to the domain? Create any objects in the configuration container? Additionally, you can try the following suggestion: 1. Download 32 bit Exchange 2007 SP1 from the following link, Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=44c66ad6-f185-4a1d-a9ab-473c1188954c&displaylang=en 2. Hi guys, try this: setup /preparedomain:<FQDN of domain> /dc:<FQDN of domain controller> - see if that helps - if you have another server in your network with the same name, you'll get the error you're experiencing because Exchange may bind to that server (or computer)instead of the domain controller it needs to connect to. Dear customer: The RTM version of Exchange 2007 cannot be installed on Windows Server 2008. However, Exchange 2007 SP1 is supported for installation on Windows Server 2008. Although you cannot install the RTM version of Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008, the RTM version of Exchange 2007 will be supported for use with Windows Server 2008 directory servers. For more information about that, please refer to the following article: Exchange Server 2007: Platforms, Editions, and Versions http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232170.aspx Also, please help provide the following information: 1. How many DCs do you have in your domain? Are their Operating Systems all Windows server 2003 SP1? 2. How many domains do you have? 3. Check whether you have a GC in every Active Directory directory service site where you plan to install Exchange 2007 SP1? 4.
