Exchange 2007 Search Index not updating
I have 6 Exchange 2007 SP3 Mailbox servers running on Widnows Server 2008. Recently two of these servers have stopped updating the Search Index. I've stopped the Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer service then deleted the search index for each database and restart the service. The index will rebuild, but never updates after the inital rebuild. I do not see any events in the event log related to the search service failing. It looks like it is never trying to update. Any ideas?

Hi B.G.G Please run the EXBPA in the Toolbox first to see whether there are some errors. And please follow the steps in the below link to troubleshoot the Exchange Search and post the error messages here. Hello Frank, Thanks for the reply. I had run across that article and have done most everything in that article. I have not looked at all the perfmon counters referenced. One perfmon counter I have been using that is returning interesting results is "MSExchange Search Indexer". I select one of the DBs that is experiencing the problem for the perfmon. Next I run the ResetSearchIndex.ps1 script. While that is running, I switch back to the perfmon and select the counter "Number of Mailboxes left to Crawl". As the index service restarts, the counter steadily counts up to the total number of mailboxes on the DB (253) and stays there. It never changes after that. I have not run the Exchagne BPA. I will run that now to see if it reports anything. Thanks, Brett

I just ran BPA Health Check, which returned nothing related to this problem.

Frank, I just ran into an issue today for the first time whereby I cannot get one of my many Exchange 2007 SP2 RU4 SCC clusters to recreate the indexes for any DBs. I noticed a few days ago that the indexes were not being updated so I simply ran the resetsearchindexes script to delete all catalog files. However, now that i've done that, my indexes are no longer being created...at all. I've verified all DBs are enabled for indexing and the search and index services are running without error upon starting. No errors are generating in the event logs. From what I can tell, it looks as though the search service is not properly spawning the Msftefd.exe process as it should. I've done everything as described in all the articles by yourself and Xiu. However, I have one cluster that now will not regenerate indexes for any DBs. I've uninstalled, reinstalled the full text indexer; re-registered all respective DLLs but my indexes will no longer recreate. Any help or guidance is appreciated. Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem. I too am on Exchange 2007 SP3, using a SCC cluster. On one of my SCC boxes, the indexes update ok, but on the othey they do not. I have run the ResetSearchIndex.ps1 script & manually restarted the Microsoft Exchange Search process with no effect on the problem server.

I think I found the answer. See this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchangesearch/archive/2011/01/18/exchange-search-fails-after-installing-exchange-2007-sp3.aspx http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesoftwareupdate/thread/20aebecb-46f9-43f7-9716-749a9d26e8d6
