Exchange 2007 SP3 schema change question
Hi All, We're looking to apply Exchange 2007 SP3 to our existing Exchange 2007 SP1 /w rollup 10 and would like to clarify some of the steps/requirements. Here's a basic overview of our setup. 1. All Exchange Servers are running SP1 with rollup 10 2. All Exchange Servers are running on Windows 2008 SP1 3. We have a single forest with multiple child domains. All Exchange servers are a member of one of the child domains 4. AD Schema has been upgraded to 2008 R2 schemas...requirement for Rollup 10 5. Root Domain is sill in 2003 Mode and have a mixture of 2003 and 2008R2 DCs 6. Child DCs are all 2003..in the process of transitioning them to 2008 R2 So here's the question. What are the necessary steps to perform the Schema update on the Schema Master? I read through the "How to Prepare Active Directory and Domains: Exchange 2007 Help" doc but it's not really clear to me. I know SP3 requires some schema changes just don't know the exact process to implement it. I think that this is the process, please correct me if i'm wrong. 1. On the Schema master, copy the Exchange 2007 SP3 files and then run setup /PrepareAD, wait for AD replication and verify that everything looks good, then proceed to step 2. 2. on the Schema master, run setup /PrepareAllDomains After all is said and done, I can proceed to install SP3 on my Exchange servers...

You have the right steps. In addition to Shafaquat's links.... Here are the step-by-step directly from MS: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224(EXCHG.80).aspx Tim Harrington - Catapult Systems - http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com

Run the Exchange 2007 SP3 setup from your exchange server and the setup will take of everything, including the schema update. Unless you are in a large environment with multiple AD sites and have to wait for AD replication, you can run the setup and let it take care of everything. It is NOT a erquirement that you have to run the commands manually.Rajith Enchiparambil | http://www.howexchangeworks.com |

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP3 adds new Active Directory schema classes and attributes, and modifies new ones. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607224(EXCHG.80).aspx You must prepare Active Directory and each domain before you perform the first installation of Exchange 2007 SP3 in an organization. This process includes updating the Active Directory schema for Exchange 2007 SP3. You could refer the link as TWHarrington said. Thanks Your expertise never fails to impress!

Tim, Do i need to specify /OrganizationName: switch in addition to the /PrepareAD or is the /OrganizationName: switch not needed. Dan

Hi, I think you are talking about this From a Command Prompt window, run the following command: setup /PrepareAD [/OrganizationName: <organization name> ] or setup /p [/on:< organization name >] So in this if you are using /prepareAD than you dont need to give Org Name but in place of /PrepareAD you can use /OrganizationName both are same. I use /PrePareAD mostly. Regards. Shafaquat Ali. M.C.I.T.P Exchange 2007/2010, M.C.I.T.P Windows Server 2008, M.C.T.S OCS Server 2007 R2, Phone: +923008210320

You only need to provide the /OrganizationName switch if this is a brand new install of Exchange in the AD forest. Since yours isn't, then you do not need that switch.Tim Harrington - Catapult Systems - http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com

Tim, I just wanted to double check that running setup /PrepareAD and setup /PrepareAllDomains from the Exchange 2007 SP3 binaries will include schema changes that were introduced in SP2 and SP3? I'm pretty sure that this is the case but just wanted to make sure. Thanks again.

How does one verify the Exchange 2007 SP3 schema changes?

I ran both setup /PrepareAD and setup /pad, and both completed successfully. However when I query on that upper range value I'm still seeing 14622 and not 14625.

I'm assuming my schema changes took hold because I was able to successfully install the SP3 update on one of my admin PCs without any issues. Its just strange to me that the 14622 value hasn't changed.

Were you able to find anything on the schema version still showing up 14622 after installing Exchange 2007 SP3? I am seeing the same issue. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Our exchange servers are in a child domain of a very large domain. We also have trusts with other domains. Do we need to run the schema/ad upgrade on every domain including the trusted domains? And what exactly is the switch command we should use?

Bump for great justice! Really just need to know if trusted domains need exchange 2010 spw schema/ad upgrades too.
