Why are you installing Exchange 2007 SP2? SP3 is the latest version which is what you should be installing. Looks to me like a bad download. I would suggest that you download the service pack fresh from the Microsoft Public site and install from that. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

I was installing SP2 because SP3 also failed, so I was attempting to step up to 2 then hopefully 3 when that was complete. I have downloaded the service pack twice already, with the same result. Should I scrap 2 altogether and just troubleshoot the errors I'm getting installing 3?

I wouldn't consider going backwards in versions. Was Service Pack 3 erroring in an identical way? If you are on Exchange 2007 SP1 with Windows 2008 R2 you are in an unsupported scenario anyway, as I believe SP2 was the first version that is supported with Windows 2008 R2. I beleive SP3 was a similiar error. Think I found the solution on technet : MSI (c) (58:50) [13:13:00:056]: Unable to create a temp copy of patch 'Exchange2007-KB935490-x64-EN.MSP'. This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. B935490 represents Update Rollup 2 for Exchange 2007 SP1. In this scenario, Windows Installer tries to locate the previous update rollup even though you are installing Update Rollup 4 for Exchange 2007 SP1. This issue occurs because Windows Installer performs the following actions even though update rollup packages contain cumulative updates to the Microsoft Exchange code: Checks for previously installed update rollup packages Locates the .msi file for any previously installed update rollup packages Windows Installer uses the previously installed files to create a full installation set to use for the current update rollup. If Windows Installer determines that a previous update rollup is installed but cannot locate the appropriate .msp file, the current update rollup installation fails. To resolve this issue, make a copy of the update rollup file that is specified in the log file, and then rename the file to the same name that is referenced in the log file. In this example, make a copy of the Update Rollup 2 for Exchange 2007 SP1 file, and then rename it to 5c321.msp. Then, copy the renamed file to the C:\Windows\Installer directory.
