Exchange 2007 Management Tools Install - File Not Found
I'm trying to install the Exchange 2007 management tools on Windows 7 32 bit. However it fails with the message 'File not found'. On looking in the logs it gives further information which points out that ldifde.exe doesn't exist on the Windows 7 PC. On doing Google searches for answers, the instructions to overcome this are: 1. Copy this file from a 32 bit server. This is not possible in my case as our server is 64 bit. or 2. Run the command ServerManagerCmd -i RSAT-ADDS. This command seems to apply to a server, not a PC and doesn't work on the Windows 7 PC. What I want to achieve with the management tools is to copy mailboxes that belong to users who have left the company to PST files prior to deleting their mailboxes. Is there any way to obtain ldifde.exe from another source, or alternatively install the tools without this file? Many Thanks, Jeremy

What version of the tools are you trying to install? I am assuming from your post that your Windows 7 is 32-bit. According to the Exchange Supportability Matrix (Supported Operating System Platform section), only Exchange with SP3 is supported: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623.aspx So are you installing the SP3 version of the tools: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=1687160b-634a-43cb-a65a-f355cff0afa6&displaylang=enTim Harrington | MVP: Exchange | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010, MCITP: Server 2008, MCTS: OCS | Blog: http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com | Twitter: @twharrington

Hi Jermey, You should download 32bit binary of exchage 2007 SP3 (Tim has provided link above) and then install it. Anil

Hi Anil, I have downloaded the 32bit binary and tried to install it on the Windows 7 32bit PC. This where I run into the problem with the message 'File not found' when I try to install just the management tools. Thanks, Jeremy

Is your Exchange Servers actually at an SP3 level? Just making sure. At what point are you seeing this message? During the install, right at the beginning? Does the setup complete the pre-req check successfully?Tim Harrington | MVP: Exchange | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010, MCITP: Server 2008, MCTS: OCS | Blog: http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com | Twitter: @twharrington

In fact , the easiest way is to download ldifde.exe from internet or from your friend. It is the process of installing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Tools. Do you miss something ? 1. Download 32 Bit Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Tools (32-Bit) Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Tools (32-Bit) 2. Extract the installation file. 3. Install the following pre-requirements components: a. Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 and the hotfix: Microsoft .NET Framework Update Required http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/Analyzer/729d1648-ff17-43f9-a1cf-4285a82d4917.mspx?mfr=true b. Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 c. Windows PowerShell 4. Run "E2K7SP1EN32.exe" from the root of the folder from stage 2. 5. Press on "Step 4: Install Microsoft Exchange". 6. Press on "Next" button. 7. Mark the checkbox "I accept the terms in the license agreement.". 8. Press on "Next" button. 9. Press on "Next" button. 10. Choose " Custom Exchange Server Installation" 11. Press on "Next" button. 12. Mark the checkbox "Management Tools". 13. Press on "Next" button. 14. Enter the Exchange Organization name (if it didn’t auto completed by the installation wizard). 15. Press on "Next" button. 16. Press on "Finish" button.

Hi Tim, The Exchange server is SBS2008. This was installed last November by a consultant - I assumed that it is SP3, but I'll double check. If the server is not SP3 would this prevent the management tools being installed on a completely different machine? The only item I am selecting for installation is the management tools when doing a custom install. The message comes up after the setup on the Win 7 PC completes it's pre-req checks successfully. I then click on the Install button and it comes up with the 'File not found' message. Thanks, Jeremy

Hi Terence, I note that one of your suggestions is that I download ldifde.exe from the internet. I am happy to do that - where would I go to download it? Thanks, Jeremy

I am assuming that the Exchange version is not SP3. If that is the case, you cannot use the SP3 management tools. Your management tools must match the version of Exchange that is running. Also, SP3 will want to extend the schema, this is most likely why you are seeing the issues with ldifde.exe. If this is the case, then you will not be able to install on Windows 7, since supportability for installing on Windows 7 was introduced with SP3: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623.aspxTim Harrington | MVP: Exchange | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010, MCITP: Server 2008, MCTS: OCS | Blog: http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com | Twitter: @twharrington

Hi Tim, I've updated Exchange so that it is now SP3. I was then able to install the Management Tools on the Windows 7 PC without any problem. Thanks for your help. Jeremy
