Exchange 2007 Mailbox Store failed to mount: missing log files, backup recover also fails with the same error...
Hi all, My Exchange server can not mount the mailbox store. It looks it get corrupted after a blackout. After restarting the Application log looks like: Event Type: Warning Event Source: ESE Event Category: Logging/Recovery Event ID: 456 Date: 1/25/2011 Time: 12:38:08 PM User: N/A Computer: CORREOWEB2003 Description: MSExchangeIS (2380) First Storage Group: The primary header page of file D:\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb was damaged. The shadow header page was used instead. Event Type: Error Event Source: ESE Event Category: Logging/Recovery Event ID: 452 Date: 1/25/2011 Time: 12:38:10 PM User: N/A Computer: CORREOWEB2003 Description: MSExchangeIS (2380) First Storage Group: Database D:\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb requires logfiles 311995-312016 in order to recover successfully. Recovery could only locate logfiles starting at 311997. Event Type: Error Event Source: ESE Event Category: Logging/Recovery Event ID: 454 Date: 1/25/2011 Time: 12:38:10 PM User: N/A Computer: CORREOWEB2003 Description: MSExchangeIS (2380) First Storage Group: Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -543. I tried to restore the backup I have from two days ago following the procedure at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996859(EXCHG.80).aspx In the backup utility I selected all the CORREOWEB2003\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group, which includes "Log Files" and "Mailbox Database". This is not detailed on the above procedure. I selected the parent, which selected both, but It looks like the "Log Files" folder is empty. When the restore finished, it not mounted. The command Mount-Database "Mailbox Store" failed. First it warned that some log files are missing, in case to proceed with the restoration I will loss some data. I said Yes. But any way the mounting failed. The log is the following: Event Type: Error Event Source: ESE Event Category: Logging/Recovery Event ID: 452 Date: 1/26/2011 Time: 7:10:43 AM User: N/A Computer: CORREOWEB2003 Description: MSExchangeIS (2432) First Storage Group: Database D:\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb requires logfiles 311134-311154 in order to recover successfully. Recovery could only locate logfiles starting at 311997. What should I do to get the Mailbox Store back to work? I don't care losing some mail, my big problem is restore the service as soon as possible. In between the failed stored is recovered, can I create and mount a new store in order to my users could send and receive mail. I'm thinking on the following procedure: Create a new Mailbox Store. Move all the users to this new store When the failed store is recovered (I hope so) some way move the recovered mail from the recovered store to the new one. Is it possible? Any hint is welcomed. Thanks in advance. Sammy My server is Exchange 2007 (Version 8.1 (Build 240.6)) Running on Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 64bits Service Pack 2

You can delete the old mailbox database and all log files, then mount the database. That will create a new database and your users will have mailbox service. Then you can restore the database to a recovery storage group and database. You can then use Restore-Mailbox to copy some or all of the mailbox content from the recovered databases to the production ones.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Thanks Ed for your replay, I just posted what I'm doing. I did something similar. I did not wanted to try an unknown feature like "Recovery Storage Group" so I created a new standard group and mailbox. For testing I "Disabled" a mailbox in the failed mailbox stored, and recreated in the new one. It works. So for the sake of my mental peace, can I do the same for all my users, and once the backup restore of the failed mailbox is finished I can hope I can copy all the recovered mail from the restored mailbox to the new one? Which command line commands can I use for doing this? Thanks Sammy

The way I told you to do it is the correct way.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Ed you are right. Following your advice on dial-up recovery I could turn back the service online immediately. I'll see if I can recover the backup. Thanks you all Sammy

Creating the recovery storage group and database, and then restoring the database to it is a pretty straightforward process. Then you can use the Restore-Mailbox utility to merge the restored recovery mailboxes to the new "dial tone" mailboxes you have just created.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Eds advice is excellent as usual, however if you have any problems recovering from backup to RSG or would like to see about repairing and then extracting data from the damaged database (assuming you still have the copy of the original database) check out Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/pricing/pricelist_digiscope.aspTroy Werelius www.Lucid8.com
