Exchange 2007 Mailbox Servers - Backups Are Very Slow
We are having issue where the backups of the Exchange 2007 mailbox servers are taking a very long time. I have already had discussions with the team that manages the backups. I was told that there system is "waiting for data" from Exchange. The network team is saying that the connection from the server to the backup system is not saturated. So, I am looking at Exchange itself to see if it is the bottleneck. I am looking for guidence on what performance counters will help me to determine if it is the Exchange server causing the slow backups. We do monitor the Exchange servers with SCOM 2012, so I have that available to help troubleshoot. Thanks in advance for the help.

How the CPU usage look like in the Server ;when backup runs ? -- What is the Backup timings ? Does it conflict with the Database Maintanence interval ? (Check in DB properties) -- Run EXTRA and Check you could see anything fishy ? -- How large the backup is ? how much time it takes ? -- OS version ? E2k3 Sp ? Hi 1. CPU,memory usage of your exchange server. 2. Can you backup only database and log? 3. What kind of backup software does your team use ?Terence Yu TechNet Community Support

How big is the actual DB(without logs)? Try using NT backup. If you're still not satisfied, try creating another DB in another storage group. Then move half of your users to that. This should be definitely cut your backup.
