Exchange 2007 Mailbox/Hub/CAS server reports that the Exchange 2007 Edge is unlicensed
Hi Everyone, I installed Exchange 2007 in production - one server is hosting the Mailbox/HUB/CAs roles. I have also installed Edge server and configured edge synchronization. The synchronization is working fine and mail flow is fine. Both servers were initially on the same subnet. I licensed both, entering the license key on each of them through the Management Console. However when I connect to the console on the internal server it reports that the Edge server is unlicensed and it will continue to work for XXX days. Completly restarted both servers - same error. On the Edge I cannot enter license any more through the console - seems that once the key was entered the option was taken out from the interface. I moved the Edge to the DMZ and separated both serverswith ISA. Everything seems working fine (sync and mail flow) but I am still getting the error about licensing. I am concerned that after 120 days the mail flow may stop if the Hub server believes that the Edge is un-licensed. Is this a bug? Does anybody know a way to fix this? Many thanks, Vania

I'm not entirely sure if this is a bug or not, but since I had the same problem... I figured out how to "solve it" (or rather, make the mailbox/hub/cas server think the EDGE is licensed now). There is a shell command you can use on the Mailbox server to tell it to license the Edge. Even though the Edge is technically already licensed, the command will succeed and the Mailbox server will not harrass you any longer that the Edge is unlicensed. The command is: set-ExchangeServerEDGE-SERVER-NAME -ProductKey aaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa Replace EDGE-SERVER-NAME with the name of your particular Edge server and the product key as appropriate. To verify it worked, run the following command: get-ExchangeServer | select name,ProductID,*trial* Remember, both these commands MUST be ran from the Mailbox/Hub/CAS server for this "fix" to work properly.

Many thanks !!! It's weird though to have to do it twice.

It is wierd having to do it twice. I would run the cmdlet for licensing the servers and you restart the Information Store on MBX servers.

Edge server's configuration data is stored on ADAM, while other role server is using AD. You could only care about the configuration data on Edge server EMC. Is the Edge server a 32-bits machine? It is not allowed to do any licensing on 32-bits machine. On the 64-bits machine, the Enter Product Key action could be enabled when the server's edition is Trail.

For what it's worth the server will not stop working when the time runs out, it will just continue to complain that it's unlicensed (so at least you dont have to worry about your server shutting down). Erik

Thank Erik, i have find this solution : - Remove the edge subscription from the HUb server console (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996865.aspx) - Generate a new subscription from the EDGE Server shell (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997590.aspx) - Import the new subscription in the HUb sevrer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123538.aspx) All work correct

I too get the following error: [PS] C:\Documents and Settings\echatham\Desktop>set-ExchangeServer clehbets01 -ProductKey xx Set-ExchangeServer : An error happened while accessing registry of the specified server: "server.domain.net". The error message: "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.". At line:1 char:19 + set-ExchangeServer <<<<server -ProductKey xx Our Edge server is alsoon a DMZ. Could this be a "Trust" issue between the DMZ and the domain??? Trying the Trust settings in the domain now, butso farthe issue still remains unsuccessfully. All DNS records in local DNS have this server listed in forward and reverse lookups.

I feel the same way. If there is a simpler way to resolve this, I'd rather go with that rather than develop an unwanted headache.
