Exchange 2007 Install - Exchange Organization not in native Mode
Hi, I am trying to install Exchange 2007 x64 Beta 2 in antest environment with an existing Exchange 2003 server.I want to see how coexistance works, moving mailboxesand the migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. I keep getting the message that the Exchange Organization is not in Native Mode. I know it is in native mode as I have checked it in System manager on the Exchange 2003 server and I have rebooted that Exchange 2003 server for good measure. Any ideas how I can get setup to recogize the server is in native mode? I'm stuck.. Thanks! Mark

Hi Mark, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/Analyzer/2d39254c-3284-4cab-9535-7633c2e6ce9b.mspx?mfr=truemight help you out, tells you the attributes the exchange uses to determine your exchange organisations operation mode and where to find them. Thanks, Mark Ps. You bumped your domain functional level up as well ? And I also heard that the schema master needed to be 2k3 Sp1 but I never came across that problem as my dc already meet that requirement. Anyway, hope that helps.

Hi Mark, I'll take a look at that and let you know. The AD level is native as well, I made sure of that before I posted. AlthoughI didn't reboot those servers, maybe that is the next step if the MS document doesn't help me. I could always blow away the current exchange 2003 server and install clean. But I wanted to test out some coexistance, upgrade scenarios etc... The schema master is already SP1, so I don't think that is the issue. I'll let you know.. Thanks! Mark

Hi Mark, Nothing I can suggest specific to this problem as I've never been in the same boat. I did have issues the first time I installed exchange and decided to go down the manual route for preparing the forest\domain simila to 2003 setup. I referenced the first part of this article on what switches to run with setup http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Installing-Exchange-2007-Part1.html.Maybe that will help. Post back if it fails and during which stage, might be able to help. Also, I had a quicksearcharound the net but couldn't find anywhere that specified an exchangeservice pack prerequisite on the 2003 server. Is your 2003 server upto Exchange SP2? Like I said, not sure if it's a requirement but that's how I had mine setup before I started playing with 2007. Anyway, post back with your results. Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark, the Exchange 2003 server is SP2. No matter what command switch I try: i.e. Setup.com /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions or Setup.com /PrepareAD I get the following: Welcome to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Unattended Setup Preparing Exchange Setup Copying Setup Files ......................... COMPLETED No Server Roles will be installed Performing Microsoft Exchange Server Prerequisite Check Organization Checks ......................... FAILED The Exchange organization is not in native mode. The Exchange Server setup operation did not complete. Visit http://support.microsoft.com and enter the Error ID to find more information. Exchange Server setup encountered an error. If I can't figure it out soon, I'll just uninstall Exchange 2003, but I'd like to get it to work... ;-) Thanks.. Mark

Mark, I also have seen this in my event log: The description for Event ID ( 2152 ) in Source ( MSExchangeADAccess ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: ExSetupUI.exe, 2736, 1753, Error 6d9 from HrGetServersForRole. I have searched through the forums with no avail... Maybe that is what is happening.. Hi Mark I've also run a search on the net\documentaion and can't find what attribute in AD the pre-install checks of 2007 scans against before this error occurs. I've opened up adsiedit.msc and found an attribute called msExchMixedMode on my test setup on the organization container under the configuration partition, looks like the most obvious thing for it to check. It's set to false in my domain and can be found in the following path CN=<Your Organization>,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=<Your Domain>. What's it set to in your domain? Ran a search on that attribute and found this article : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/260781. Hope this helps. Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark, I ran into the same problem, although while deinstalling Exchange 2003 i got the message that the Organization was going to be removed, because this was the last Exchange 2003 Box in it. Still i got the same error about Exchange not being in Native mode. I've changed the msExchMixedMode attrib booleanvalue from TRUE to FALSE. Replicated that and ran Setup /PS again, to prepare the schema. No problems after that. Running E2K7 like a charm. Regards, Nikolai
