Exchange 2007 CCR SP2 to Exchange 2010 SP1 migration into the same hardware
Hi Experts,
This is a deployment scenario. Please suggest best possible solution for this...!
We have Exchange 2007 SP2 in CCR environment in 2 sites
Site A:
1 Mailbox server (MBX1)
1 HUB\CAS server(HUB1)
1 Edge Server(EDGE1)
Site B:
1 Mailbox Server (MBX2)
1 HUB\CAS (HUB2)
1 Edge Server (EDGE2)
Mailbox Servers in CCR
HUB\CAS Servers in NLB
Now we need to migrate\upgrade to Exchange 2010 SP1
Management want to use the same h\w but given option for leasing addtitional h\w if required in the Transition process
So now I have 6 servers+Planning to lease additional servers for 2 months to start transition
Advice me,
1.Using additional leased h\w I will start migration
2.After the transition over how can i rebuild the Own h\w for housing the 2010 SP1
3.What is the best practice to carry over this with no down time.
Please awaiting your valuable ideas!

Manju

I’ll start from here
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/exdeploy2010/default(en-us).aspx#Index
Anyway, standard approach for any Exchange Transition is to build the internet facing CAS sevrers first then Hub Transport and upon their successful integration within an existing
environment plan mailbox(DAG) and get the storage calculated etc and roll them in as well and upon successful integration, start the mailbox move etc....
This link will be very helpful also....

So start from here and feel free to ask if you’ve any questions please.Regards, Pushkal MishrA

Hi Pushkal, Thank you for the update! I have doubt in Mailbox role design here. Currently we have CCR and 15 databases hosted in this CCR. Also the 2 mailbox servers are located in 2 data centers with a stretched VLAN (Each DC 1 mailbox servers). But if
I go with DAG what is the best design I can select. 1. Do I need to place the mailbox servers as earlier in CCR(Each 1 in each Datacenter) 2.If I place Like that how can I put the mailbox databases for HA. 3.Ex: I placed all the 15 DB in Site A then how can
I achieve HA by placing the database copies over Site B 4. What kind of DAG is suitable here(Is single DAG enough or need to go with multiple DAG Please clarify Manju

Dear All,
Also now 5000 mailboxes are hosted in 2 node CCR.
If I go with DAG, what is the best way to distribute the mailboxes(5000)
We are planning for 2 node DAG to keep in 2 Data centers.
Please clarify!

You perhaps dont need mutliple DAGs, having one DAG that would have members across data centers will serve the purpose,
please find the links that revolves around DAG planning please.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638104.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638121.aspx
Also to answer your question, perhaps you would want to distribute 5000 mailbox across three members(one DAG) ,two in one datacenter and and third on other datacenter that way you'll have three copies of databases i.e. two sitting local to DC and third across
other DC but nevertheless follow the articles above and see what design fits your Hight availability/Budget/Opertional feasibility need.
See this article as well for database copy layout please

Hi All,
Above article has a time span where there will not be any HA
But here I got leased H\W to migrate completely to 2010.
But my current requirement is capacity planning for 5000 users and how to place them in the 2 Mailbox servers and achieve HA
Please guide me to plan the capacity for this scenario.
And one more thing what I noticed is there is no proper information available like,
1. How many maximum user can be srored on single server (Mailbox)
2.Its known fact that Enterprise version of Exchange 2010 supports 100 DBs+RDB means how may maximum mailboxes it can accomodate.
3.Using 2 mailbox servers is it possible to host 5000+ users in the current scenario with seperate HUB\CAS,Edge servers.
These questions include most of my requirements, please reply.

You need to use Mailbox calculator to do the sizing and here is link

Please follow the links related to mailbox design

As this will help you design but remember this is Dell specific and if you use other vendor then look up to their site.Regards, Pushkal MishrA
