Exchange 2007 Beta Upgrade path to Final Release
Hello. If I deploy Exchange 2007 Beta 2 as a new exchange server at our corporation for testing with new mail box's will there be a upgrade path available to take the beta to the final release version of the code. Thanks ... Paul.

It's a bad idea as well as unsupported to deploy Exchange Server 2007 Beta 2 into an existing production environment, unless you're participating in the TAP or RDP. When thats said I can inform you it isn't possible to do an in-place upgrade from Beta 2 to RTM, you will instead need to introduce a new server in the org, then move mailboxes etc. to the new server.

Henrik is right in cautioning deployment of e12 into a production environment. However, with regard to upgrade, his statement isnot strictly true. In-place upgrade will be supported for Mailbox role. Client Access will require uninstall and reinstall. For the other roles, upgrade may or may not be supported, depending on the depth of changes between Beta2 and RTM. For a server with multiple roles installed, then, the upgrade path will be a trifle tedious: uninstall of the non-upgradeable roles; upgrade of the mailbox role to RTM build; install of RTM version of additional roles. However, for servers with a lot of mailbox data, this is a small cost to pay against the time it can take to move all users off to another server. /alex

Hmm we have a customer in the RDP and has been told to use the swingmethod, when moving from Beta 2 to RTM. Good info Alex

Henrik - we did that to just reduce risk and complexity for the RDP customers. We try to be as prescriptive as possible for RDP because we have a lot of deployments to do in a short amount of time, with a limited budget.

So basically, I shouldn't have any problem just uninstalling the other roles... Installing the final Exchange 2007 with mailbox upgrade, client access, hub transport and then configuring those. Will there be a way that I could possibly export all of my settings to a configuration file so that I don't have to re-enter all of the accepted domains, configure the receive and send connectors, all of the anti-spam settings, etc..? Thanks.

I'd like to pose a question in regards to the "swing" method of moving from Beta 2 to RTM. Using B2 on a single server at my house for personal email, have about 8 mailboxes. I also have a VMware ESX server. As I understand it, I could... 1. build a new RTM server in ESX2. move the mailboxes to it3. remove B2 from the physical server4. install RTM on the physical server5. move mailboxes back to physical server6. uninstall RTM from ESX server. Now, one question that I saw someone else in this thread talking about.... Do I need to also re-install Windows Server on the physical server, or will removing B2 be enough? Thanks!
