Exchange 2007 - Server transition
Hi all, I have an Exchange 2007 server in my organization already and I want to change it because Hardware is too old.I'd like to know how to make the transition as transparent as possible. In fact, I did install a new Exchange 2007 server in my domain, but when I've moved a mailbox on the new server, nothing happen. Unable to send or receive mail since the move. Probably a routing problem...So, I really need to know how to proceed, because I don't much space available on my old server.Best regards,Johnny

What does your server config look like? Are you running all the roles on one server, and is it installed in the same Exchange org and site as your existing server? You should be able to stand up a new mailbox server and just move mailboxes to it.

Well, my actual server is a stand alone serveur. No AD on it. Same thing for the new server. Both servers are in same domain and same organization. On my new server, I have create a new mailbox database and I've moved a mailbox from the actual server to the new one. Unfortunately, no success. The configuration of the actual server is :Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 SP2 x644 gig of RAMThe configuration of the new server is :Windows 2008 Enterprise SP2 x648 gig of RAMPlease let me know if you need something else.Johnny

What Exchange roles are installed on the new server? When you send email to the mailbox that was moved, what does it show in your message tracking logs?

When I send a mail from gmail.com to my exchange mailbox, I receive it. Email passed through the actual server and deliver it to the new server where my exchange mailbox is.When I try to send a email to my gmail.com account, nothing happen... :(And when I try to send email from my exchange mailbox to my exchange mailbox. It works. I receive it.It looks like my new server do not pass by the actual server to send email or something like that. What do you think?

What's in the transport queues on your new server? It sounds like it's not able to send external email. Are you using an Edge server, or delivering directly from your HT server? Are you using a smarthost, and is it configure to accept mail from the new HT server? Is there a firewall involved, and is it configured to allow outbound mail from the new server? Did you set up your SPF records for the new server? Lots of possibilities.

You were right, my sent emails are stacked in the Send External Queue on the new server. There is no Edge server. Just remember that the Hub transport is installed on both servers. So it is delivering directly form my HT Server.Smarthost?Yes, we have a FW but all open from the inside.I'm pretty sure I need to allow my new server to relay through the actual one and I'm also pretty sure that I have to configure my new server send email from the actual server...I'm confused right now...

Did you add that server as a source server for your organization smtp send connnector?
March 8th, 2010 9:31pm

No. I assume I should? How may I proceed?I've tried to do it. I went to Organization Configuration / Hub Transport / Send Connectors -> Send ExternalIn the Source Server Tab, I add my new server. So now, I have the actual server and the new one AS source servers...

Ok, email goes out, but directly from the new server. So for now, it isn't ok because it do not correspond to our MX records. Is there a way that emails sent form the new server goes through the actual exchange server?Best regards, Johnny

Try another email, or force a re-connect on your queue and see if it delivers mail. If not, turn up the protocol logging on your new server to "verbose" and see what the smtp logs tell you.

Well like I've wrote before, the email sent from the mailbox on the new server goes out after putting the new server in the Source Servers list. But, email goes out from the new server instead of being sent from the old one like I would like to. Because for now I don't want my old server to be considered like spam server. So, Is there a way that emails sent form the new server goes through the old exchange server?Best regards, Johnny

Why would that make your old server be considered a spam server? As long as both servers are in your SPF records, email from your domains from either one should be considered legitimate. If you're transitioning with the objective of retiring that old server, you need the new server in those spf records anyway.

Why would that make your old server be considered a spam server? Because email are going out from a different IP Address than the Old server. But your are probably right with th SFP Records.

If you put both servers in your SPF record, you can just proceed with your transition, and when you're done, just remove the old server from your SPF records. You'll also need to take care of your MX records for inbound if you haven't already.
