Exchange 2007 (SBS2008) Refuses to Use SBS Server for its DC/GC
I'm working on an environment that is being 'migrated' from Server 2003 to SBS2008. The old DC's are still up and running and in a different site than the SBS server. When DSAccess runs on the SBS server, it flat refuses to recognize the DC/GC on the SBS2008 server itself, and will only utilize the DC/GC resources in the original site. Event Ids 2084 and 2085 confirm my observations. The forest/domain has been prep'd..The Exchange Enterprise Servers and Exchange Servers groups are granted Manage auditing and security logs user rights on DCs..Any ideas would be appreciated. I am unable to properly demote the original DCs until I am certain that Exchange on the SBS will function.

The SBS2008 server is using itself for DNS and all appropriate records are present.

Can you post the 2080 dsacess event logs showing what servers it found?Oddly no.. there are no 2080 events. Plenty of 2085's stating the following: Process MSEXCHANGEADTOPOLOGYSERVICE.EXE (PID=5612). No Global Catalog server is up in the local site 'Birmingham'. Exchange Active Directory Provider will use the following out of site global catalog servers: es01.loeb.dns FS02.loeb.dns Are there different AD sites?Yes.. there are two, and both are properly defined within ADSS and have proper recordswithin DNSIs the Exchange Server a member of the Exchange Server security groups?Yes, checked and recheckedCan run ExBpa against the server?Yes, all tests return clean results..

Sigh.. from the Partner Forums: Problem Description: ================ The Exchange 2007 server which is also a domain controller doesn't recognize itself as the DC/GC. Cause: ================ If Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 is also a Domain Controller, you need to enable IPv6 on this server or it does not recognize itself as a DC/GC. Resolution: ================= Enable IPv6 on the Exchange 2007 server.Enabled IPv6, bounced the AD Discover Service and all is good. Thanks Andy for trying to help.. I've dealt with this issue (Exchange not using DC/GC on a given domain controller) many times in the past with Exchange 2003 orgs; it's typically SACL issues on the DC, but this was a twist for me.

i cant even tell you how many things i tried before i found this forum. Everyone was talking about Manage Auditing and Security log permissions and all this other jazz. I figured since i wasn't using ipv6 i'd disable it... well after enabling it was instantly fixed so thank you! WITH IPv6 DISABLED: IAI.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1 IAI-SBS08.domain.local CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 WITH IPv6 ENABLED: IAI.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1 IAI-SBS08.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1 And Exchange is only looking at itself for DC, GC! Tanks so much!!!

This is a known fact in the SBS world, but you can also disable IPv6 if you do it the right way (described in this article as well). That being said, it took me two or three days of confusion and ended up with IPv6 again (before the article was published).
