Exchange 2007: Users old emails auto deleted, client didn't archive.
Server: MS Server 2008 Std w/ Exchange 2007 Client: Windows Vista Business w/ Office 2007 Pro The user had thousands of emails in his deleted folder which are missing. He says he didn't delete them, and theres only a small archive file, which I've opened and verified are NOT the emails. So now for my question. Is there a default policy in Exchange which will regulate the size of user PSTs? or auto archive them somewhere on the server?Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Microsoft Exchange 2007

There is nothing in Exchange that has anything to do with PST files. Your Outlook clients can "auto archive" and will do so by default unless the user turns them off, or.......... You have put a GPO in place that restricts the creation and maximum size of PST files. If the user has had a mass disappearance of email then you are looking at PST auto archive (which you seem to have discounted) or he's accidentally emptied his folder on exit or at some time. Are you sure there's no MRM policy affecting the folder? You'd think that if there was you'd know about it and it would apply to more than one user but you still gotta ask. You never know. Hi, As per my knowledge , No, There is no such policy in exchange which manage user PST data in desktop, But there is size limit for PST. Have you tried to search deleted mail in "Deleted Item" in outlook. Deleted item retention period is valu which you configure at server level and even hard deleted items can be restore.Anil

I have checked his "deleted items" folder, and this is where the mails are missing from. I have also checked his one "archive" folder, and the missing deleted items aren't there either. How can I restore deleted items? and what is MRM policy?Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Microsoft Exchange 2007

Well, that's good news. If you don't know what Message Records Management is in 2007 it's odds-on that you haven't set them up. I would create a Recovery Storage Group and then restore the database to it and then export-mailbox the items out. http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Working-Recovery-Storage-Groups-Exchange-2007.html will help you get the RSG up and running. ok I'm having trouble with this now. I've created a RSG, and then from a backup, I've recovered the first mailbox group mailbox (which only created another EDB). I don't know how to mount the recovered backup. I tried to delete the EDB in the RSG folder, and save the backup as the same name and then mount it, but no luck. didn't mount.Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Microsoft Exchange 2007

I am having some trouble restoring a backup of my first mailbox storage group mailbox. I recovered the EDB from Windows Backup and placed it in my already created RSG folder. I cannot mount the recovered mailbox. please advise. Also, is there a default setting that deletes emails out of my clients deleted items folder after a certain time period? I (the admin) just noticed that my deleted items only date back as far as 3 months ago, and I know I didn't delete them permanently myself.Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Microsoft Exchange 2007

So everything over 3 months is being deleted? I would suspect that it's consistent. Are you sure nobody has create a Message Records Management policy (you can google those words and MRM for some pointers on what to look for). Did you have a predecessor or has it just been you since the system was installed? Also there could still easily be a PST stashed away somewhere. Have you got policies redirecting the local profile to a file server? Given what you've just said about the age of the items you're probably not going to get much joy from the RSG but even then, the article I pointed you at should have been all you needed. I can't really give you any more help than that tutorial on msexchange.org gives you. The screen images say more than any amount of dry old text.
