Exchange 2007: Do I need Edge Subscription for this scenario ?
Hi all,I am configuring the email system for 100 staff user and 1000 student. Organization have a external email virus and spum filtering. All email coming from outside autometically forword to that 3rd party company to check for viruses and spum. Then after getting it checked, it back to our mail server. As I dont feel any security reason for virus and spum, and getting trouble of configuring edge server, I have enabled the Hub Server to accept external email. So currently Hub Server is receiving external email and also sending external email. Will I face any future problem running my organization email exchange 2007 without Edge Subscription configured? Thanks,Monir

I am bit confuse that you mentioned that you are getting all mails scanned after 3rd party company and also mentioned that you have hub configured to accept and send mails, hope you have followed below article to configure it. How to Configure Internet Mail Flow Through Exchange Hosted Services or an External SMTP Gateway http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738161.aspx In this case you can skip the Edge Transport server configured since mails are already being scanned by 3rd party. There are only few features like addressrewriting you would miss without Edge...Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Edge subscription is required only when you have the EDGE server. and since you already have existing setup where spam and virus scan been performed by 3rd party you really dont have to worry about Edge Subscription. In future if you want to migrate from third party spam/virus service to in house in that case you can opt for Edge Server and then start synchronizing the Edge Subscription between Edge and Hub.
