Exchange 2007.. possible to schedule offline defrag? Any harm in running the command in general?
In an effort to get our database size back down in size.. i wanted to do the offline defrag.. I'm aware i can run the eseutil command with the offline defrag switch.. but the database must be dismounted and the process could run quite a while.. Is it possible to "schedule" this command, so that the database automatically gets dismounted and remounted when done? Is there any reason to avoid doing the offline defrag? Any harm in running it? Thanks

Weigh the ammount of white space you have versus the downtime it'll take to see if its worth it all. You could use a scheduled task with a powershell scriptthen eseutil, but generally online defrags are fine unless you are running out of disk space.

Well.. prior to restoring a bunch of lost emails.. our database was 27gb.. now its 37gb.. Frankly, we have 300gb free, so free space isnt an issue, i was just hoping to shrink that size back down, which would help reduce the time it takes to backup as well.. Perhaps its not worth it.. Are online defrags automatic at some point?

They should be running every night. Check your event log. Personlly, I'd leave it be and let the whitespace be reclaimed as you add more users or as existing users use more space.
