Exchange 2003 maintenance
Hi All, We have to do Some maintenance of Our exchange Server like De-fragmentation of Mailbox store, So need some suggestion. How we can proceed. Need Suggestion Urgently. Thanks Mukesh

Who says you need to do this? What makes you think you need to? If you think your mailbox store is heavily fragmented internally you will look for event ID 1221. There will be five of those per night. That will tell you how much free space there is inside the database. Unless that number amounts to 30-40% of the store size you're utterly wasting your time and can completely forget the notion of defragging. If you are on Exchange 2003 Enterprise edition you won't ever defrag the store anyway. All you are going to do is to create a couple of new stores and move all the mailboxes out and then delete the original. Anyway, two options that largely depend on what your actual situation is. Hi Mark Thanks for quick response. We are using Exchange 2003 enterprise version and our database size is around 85 GB, I gone thru the event log and find " has 8629 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated" We want to do this for fast searching, Nothing else. One more question if our database is heavy in size, so that will create any impact on user mail accessing or any other issue. thanks Mukesh

tht depends on many paramters how good ur disks are setup, system cpu, memory. how big are these mailbxoes, and how man users are there in this particular store? If you really want to reclaim that space...my suggestion is to create another database (or even a couple) and move users to those and remove the original database. I never recommend an offline de-frag of a database. Takes way too long and you always run a risk of corruption. Do as Tim and I said in that case. 85GB is a little on the large side depending on the horsepower of the server. I said to create two new stores in a new storage group (each) and move all the mailboxes to those two new stores. Finally eliminate the old one. You will generate a lot of logs. Thanks, i will do that but need to confirm that will reclaim the space. if we have deleted 100 Mailboxes those size is around 10 GB then it will reclaim all that space. thanks Mukesh

Hi Mukesh, One last suggestion. Please ensure that the new database is on drive where you have enough room. Move Mailbox will generate tons of Transaction Logs which may fill the drive and the database may go offline. Recommended way is to enable circular logging on both Source and Target Storage group and then perform the task. Once that is done ensure to disable circular logging. Note: If you enable circular logging then you have to restart the MsExchangeIS service.
