Exchange 2003 mailboxes disappearing
Well here's an interesting one... Our helpdesk reports this morning that a user called and was unable to get into their mailbox. Upon further investigation, it was found that the mailbox was simply gone. No trace of it in AD, no orphaned items in AD, no mailbox in system manager etc... We've checked the exchange node (we've got a 3 node cluster) and it checks out ok, message store checks out OK, we've even go so far as to verify that we dont have any issues on the SAN which may cause this. Suggestions or comments?

Clarify: A mailbox was missing on the Exchange server, it cant be found in the ESM Collect info: 1. When you said its gone, do you mean that users account was also missing from ADUC? 2. How long has it been since mailbox was missing? 3. Is there any related info in the application log? Troubleshooting: 1. Send a testing mail to missing mailbox, check the mail in Message Tracking Center 2. Please use ADSI Editor to check the existent of user account and mailbox [under Domain Tree->DC=XX,DC=XX Tree->check if users there and its homemdb attribute in the Properties points to a valid mailbox store] Notes: ADSI Editor is included in Windows Server 200x Support Tools http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/ebca3324-5427-471a-bc19-9aa1decd3d401033.mspx?mfr=true 3. If the step 2 is True, try to change homemdb attribute to another existed mailbox store, and send a testing mail to missing mailbox, then go back to ESM, see if the mailbox is visible in new store now 4. Used MAPI Editor to verify if the mailbox existed a. Go on a testing PC as a user who has admin right [or the right in the KB 262054] and create mail profile b. Run MAPI Editor [download with link below] c. On the Session menu->choose Logon and Display Store Table->choose admins profile in jumped window d. On the MDB menu->choose Get Mailbox Table->choose the server which contain missing mailbox before and click OK e. Now you can see all the mailbox existed in that server, check if missing mailbox is there Recover the missing mailbox Notes: Restore the mailbox, if user account is also gone, you may follow the articles below to do get the mailbox back Requirement: 1. Recently backup file of the mailbox store which missing mailbox stayed 2. Create Recovery Storage Group 3. Create a new Storage Group Steps: 1. Please follow the article below [Recover a Purged Mailbox from an Online Backup Using the Original Database Server] http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997796(EXCHG.65).aspx 2.
