Exchange 2003 mail problems from certain domains.
Hi, we seem to be losing some incoming mail. Can’t seem to get mail from certain people but I can’t seem to trace were the problem is coming from. The two recent domains are @<something>.co.za and the other is @<somethingelse>.co.za Both claim they send the mail but we receive nothing. The ISA 2006 firewall shows some sort of communication from <user>@<somethingelse>.co.za but on my Exchange it’s showing nothing. They also state that they get no reply mail that there were some kind of error. I looked through the logs again and only error I can see is the one below. 2011-04-05 14:12:14 192.168.0.56 OutboundConnectionResponse SMTPSVC1 CELESTIX - 25 - - 550+5.7.1+Unable+to+relay+for+phillip@cupboardsupply.co.za 0 0 58 0 10125 SMTP - - - - Not sure if this were the actual message or the error response that it’s giving this error on though. I have disable the reverse dns lookup function on the isa server but that didn’t help. ISA server only has IIS5 running with a smtp virtual server that forwards all mail to my mail server. I have checked and rechecked all the settings and can’t seem to find a solution to this. Other mail seem to be working great. Any ideas on this?

Did you check if you are on any blacklists? http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx

I can send to both domains through telnet but my problem is I'm unable to receive mail from them. But yes I did test it to make sure.

I have checked on the link you provided and my mail server IP is not listed there.

Are they sending to one email address on your domain or does it happen with all email addresses on your domain? What are your options for logging with your ISA server? If is is sitting on smtp, are those the logs your are looking at? If it is not generating any logs on that server, your ISA server must be dropping the connection before smtp gets a change to log it. What features do you have enabled on ISA? Have them send an email to your company and cc and outside email account like a test yahoo account to see what the message looks like and to verify that they did indeed send it. That will also give you an exact reference for time if you can turn up verbose logging.

It's happning from the user that complained he's not getting the mails and I have asked them to send to me and I'm also not getting the mails. It's got the default IIS virtual SMTP server logging activated and that's were I'm looking at. Have been able to find ISA logs but says nothing usefull. See below. Hi, Here is a list of all Exchange filter, Organization level filter, SMTP virtual filter, and Recipient filter. Could you please check all the aspects again especially the SMTP virtual filter? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823866 As you have test, you also unable to receive email from the two special sender, I think it won’t the recipient filter issue. One option, if you block certain@co.za send mail to your organization, you may also block tain@co.za and such similar E-mail address. Could you please ask the two special sender enable message tracking? May be you could get some useful information. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I have rechecked the above mentioned filters and saw I had some blocks that were name@certain.co.za and replaced them with *@certain.co.za rather but still not working. What I have tried today is telnet 25 to my isa IP and send mail as problem domain account and it didn't give erros. Got the mail. Then I tried telnet 25 to my exchange IP and send mail as problem domain account and it didn't give erros. Got that mail also.

Are you sure you're not blocking their IP in the IIS SMTP connection control setting in the access tab of the ISA?James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com
