Well, you normally just need to supply the client application with a (publicly resolveable) server name, a username, a password, and the email address for the account. At the LAN end, you'll need to make sure that port 110 (for POP) is forwarded
to the Exchange server, and that the POP service is running. Having said all that, POP isn't a particularly good client protocol. IMAP is better, and RPC over HTTPS is even better.

If you have to resort to using pop or imap use it over SSL so it's encrypted.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

hi,
You should notice that:
With POP, you can only access your Inbox, whereas IMAP allows you to access all of your folders. And if you use pop to receive message, your message will be download to local. This means that you would connect to the server, download
all your messages and then disconnect to read them. Messages would also be composed offline and then sent when you connect.
Such a method of working does not work very well when you are using multiple client computers, since your messages are stored locally.
So like Lee say, Imap is better than pop. But imap is not used widely.
So i really recommend that you use rpc over http.
Please see this link, it will help you to enable rpc over http.
