Exchange 2003 freezing server
We have a SBS 2003 server and every couple of weeks or so Exchange will stop working and hang the server. Reviewing the Event logs does not reveal any issues, in fact all data to the event logs stops at the moment of hang. The only way to restart the server is to do a hard shut down and bring it back up. The one thing I was able to find recently was a WINS entry on the server NIC pointed to a different subnet no longer used. Could this have been causing the issue?

Unlikely to be Exchange that causes a complete lock up of the server. Usual cause is going to be hardware. If you have to hard reboot the server to get it working again, then that defiantly sounds like a hardware issue. Is it a branded server? If so, make sure you have their diagnostic tools installed and see if that shows anything. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

This is a forum for Exchange 2010. You should post in either the general Exchange forums, or the SBS forums. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

could be that you are reaching the DB size limit for SBS http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Explaining-Database-size-limit-changes-Exchange-2003-Service-Pack-2.htmlTroy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

Fortunately that is not the problem. We already have then setup for 75Gb, currently they are sitting on roughly 52Gb. I will repost in the exchange general.

How do you know Exchange stopped working and froze the Windows server? Did you receive any error message? What’s the detail symptom when the server hanged up? At this stage, I suggest you download Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer v2.8 and scan the whole Exchange system. Meanwhile, I agree with Simon and the issue usually is caused by hardware. Please check relevant hardware settings first. Thanks.
