Exchange 2003 database size growing
We have exchange 2003 sp2 server. It has two separate drives. One for data and one drive assigned for log. However, the data drive ( all mailboxes sitting here) is almost full and having only 800MB left as free space. The log drive is having around 100GB free space. We would like to know how we can free up more space. we are archiving user mailboxes and also taking backups on regular basis so the database size should go down but is not happning. we also created another mailbox store pointing the database to another drive ( log drive) which has more space, and moving few users to that store but still database size remains same and is not reducing. Is there anything we can do so that we can free up some space. your urgent help and advice needed.

Archiving will move and stub the data but to truly make the EDB smaller you need to use ESEUTIL /D or use a third party product to do a full Exchange maintenance which will defragment and optimize the EDB. For your purposes however ESEUTIL /D should do the trick FYI ESEUTIL /D is an OFFLINE process, i.e. users will not be able to gain access to their mailboxes during this time and processing time is between 2-4GB an hour. Alternatively you can move all users into the new EDB on the other drive and then dump/delete the old EDB once all users are moved Troy Werelius www.Lucid8.com

Hi, I will not suggest you to do offline defrag of databse to shrik it white spaces. Third alternative is best and you should create one new databse and move all mailbox into it, then delete existing DB and create new DB and movbe back all mailbox into it. Anil

Hi, I will not suggest you to run eseutil /D for offline defrag, You should create new databse and move all mailbox into it, later delete existing DB and create new one, again move all mailbox into new DB.Anil
