Exchange 2003 connectivity issue
I have a client with a Exchange Server 2003 that has an problem with receiving e-mail. They can send mail from Outlook 2003 and OWA but only receive mail in OWA. Incoming mail does not appear in Outlook. The server is Windows SBS 2003 SP2 with Exchange 2003 SP2. The workstation is Windows 7 Pro with Office 2010 (pre-installed) and Office 2003 (client installed). Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Two other items of interest. The user can send mail from Outlook to their Exchange e-mail address and receive it. And they are also receiving faxes sent via e-mail from their fax machine.

There's only one mailbox, so if OWA sees the mail but Outlook doesn't, well . . . It could be a problem with the .OST file (if Outlook is configured to work in Exchange cached-mode), or a problem with filters. Try NOT using cached-mode. Do the message appear? If not, disable the flters in the current view. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

One of the first things I did was to check for Cached mode in the mailbox properties. I deselected it and still got the same results. I then removed the mailbox and deleted the user's profile. I then logged in as local admin and cleaned out the c:\documents and settings\username\application data\Microsoft\outlook\ and c:\document and settings\username\local settings\application data\Microsoft\outlook directories. From there I logged back in as the user and created a new profile and easy connected to their mailbox. Exchange resolved the server name and username (as I only put in the first name) when I selected 'Check name'. As for messages, I do not get any. I have set the send and receive options to display and can see the progress indicator, but no messages appear on the errors tab. I also check for filters, but there are none. I have the users old system here and have removed the mbr rootkit / viruses that took it off-line in the first place. I am wondering if their mailbox may be corrupted / infected? Or could it be the pre-install Norton av on the new windows 7 laptop? I will have the old system back in-place and on-line some time today, so I will post an update later today.

Whatever it is, it's happening on the client. As I said, there's onlyone mailbox and if OWA sees messages there and Outlook doesn't then Outlook (or the environment in which it's running) is the problem. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

I put the client's clean Win XP / Outlook 2003 system back online and the issue is gone. The Win 7 laptop is to blame. From what I have been told, this Win 7 laptop had come with a pre-installed version of Office 2010. They had uninstalled Outlook 2010 and then installed Office 2003 with Outlook 2003. I am going to imagine that the two versions of Office is to blame on the system. I am going to reformat / reload this laptop after the holidays and then do the proper Office 2003 set up. Thanks to everyone for all of the assistance, Scott
