Exchange 2003 backup fails in Backupexec 11d with database not responding after maildb restore
I have inherited a situation where the mail db fails to backp with a communication error after restoring the mail db. The restore was done by some one who no longer is avaialable so I have limited insight on how the restore was done. All users are working finen and no data is missing, but it is just the backup that fails. Pubilc folders db as well as any OS file in the serve backsup ok. We have re-installed the exchange agent, but no change. Also, last sunday some one was able do a backp to disk successfully instead of the usual tape, but every job has failed since or before then. We are not getting the usual errors in the app logs to indicate file corruption of the db so I am not sure I want to run any utils on the db. Can any one advice on what util I may use, besides eseutil, that may correct the inconsistencies? Thanks for the help. regards

ESEUTIL is the only tool that can resolve database issues. Your only other resolution would be to create another database (if Enterprise edition) or build a temporary server so you can move the mailboxes to that temporary server, drop the original database and recreate it, before moving the content back. Have you tried using NTBACKUP to backup the database? That will confirm if the issue is with Exchange or the backup application. What do your application logs say when you are trying to run the backup?

How many storage groups and databases do you have? NT backup can't see any other storage groups or database? Is your backup software able to backup the other databases? If you create another test DB can you back that up? Need to isolate if it's actually a DB issue causing the failed backup or if it's a system\application issue. Try the suggestion below from another thread first. I assume that ntbackup is running on the exchange server that you want to backup, right? You can’t see the database (Store) that shows in the picture ofthis article? How about the storage group? Please start NTBackup, the “System Information” in the “Accessories”, and then verify if the following two modules are running in the “Loaded Modules” ·eseback2.dll (Loaded by store.exe) ·esebcli2.dll (Loaded by NTBackup) Please open the “Local Security Settings” tool, expand “Local Policies” and select “User rights Assignments”. In the right pane, double-click “Back up files and directories”, verify that “Backup Operators” and “Administrators” have the “Effective Policy Setting” box checked. By default it will be checked and inherited for both accounts Please disable “Domain Policy” at the domain level, and check the result again Please rename the Edbbcli.dll, reboot the server, and check the result again James Luo TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contacttngfb@microsoft.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
