Exchange 2003 System Attendant does not start on reboot
After a power outage, the Exchange server comes up faster than the DC. The Exchange server fails to start 3 dependant services: Information Store MTA Stacks and System Attendant The error message (event ID 7001) for the Infomration Store is: The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service depends on the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service which failed to start because of the following error: The operation completed successfully. Because the System Attendant did not start, the other 2 services did not start. If we wait for a 10 minutes and the DC is up, manually starting the services is the simple solution. Using the Recovery tab in the Services section, we set the Restart the Serivice flag on all three services for the first, secong and subsequent failures, with a 15 minute restart window and a 0 day reset counter. These actions are never triggered. I think that it has to do with the error message, which says "The operation completed successfully". Any idea on how to troubleshoot this? Or should I write a script that can check whether the services are running and start it? (i know, not the best solution) Thanks Singh

Hi, we do not suggest that you install Exchange 2003 and DC on the same server. That will result in a lot of problem. http://hellomate.typepad.com/exchange/2004/02/exchange_on_a_d.html Is there any other errors in the event log? Analyze the cause of failure of System Attendant. Update exchange 2003 and windows 2003 to the latest version. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
