Exchange 2003 Setup
Hello,I am using exchange 2003 for a school project(I know everyone says why not 2007? 2010? but its what school supplies us with) Normally for the Microsoft Labs, we install exchange on the same machine as the DNS and DHCP. I do not really like this method and would prefer to set it up as stand alone. I have a few questions. Running Server 2003 (Standard) do I join the domain and then install exchange? Or do I set my server as a new domain controller and then install exchange. I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks J.Silvestro

If you have 2 servers, you should set up one as the a Domain Controller/DNS/DHCP. Then join the second machine to the domain and then install Exchange. By adding another DC to the existing domain I'm not sure what you are getting out of it? You need a domain to install Exchange.Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:EMA 2K7,EDA Win 7,ES,SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

Ok thats what I thought. But when I set it up that way, outlook (on the Exchange Server) says it is unable to contact the microsoft exchange server and may be offline. What would you think I am missing? I did do all the predeployment tools.J.Silvestro

Hi, Microsoft does not support installing Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 (including Exchange System Manager), Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server (including Exchange System Manager), or Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 on the same computer. The Product Support group does not support the coexistence of Outlook and Exchange on the same computer in a production environment. Check OWA from exchnage server and verify access. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/266418?p=1 Are you getting any other problem when connecting outlook from any client machine ?Anil

Please correct me if I am mistaken. 1.Server 1 Install DNS/DHCP 2.Join Server 2, to the domain 3.Install exchange on server 2J.Silvestro

joshua I will rephrase your steps like this 1. in server-1 give a static IP, install Active directory by running dcpromo, this will automatically installs DNS, (Active directory integrated dns) 2. Install DHCP on Server -1. 3. Join Server-2 to a domain. 4. Install Exchange server 2003 on server-2 to install exchange server 2003, you need to install additional componets in server-2, i.e . IIS,imap, then run exchange 2003 setup let me know the update what you did. With best regards siddu sajjan : Disclaimer: This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Ok I did do all of that, in that order. Now on the client machine when having to configure the client outlook i put in the server name and user name when I check the name it automatically switches from the Exchange server to the DNS' computer name. Heres what I have DNS/DHCP (191.166.100.1) Exchange (191.166.100.4) Client (191.166.100.10) I can pick exchange from client but not client from exchange. And it says outlook must be online in order to complete this action when trying to run outlook? J.Silvestro

Ok UPDATE: I got them all to ping overlooked the firewall but that got everything talking. I still have the problem when checking names it switches what I put in to the DNS. And if I proceed and try to send email it says outlook needs to be online. Here is what I got back for MX look up from client machine. C:\Documents and Settings\JSilvestro>nslookup -type=mx silvestro.com DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Can't find server name for address 191.166.100.1: Timed out *** Default servers are not available Server: UnKnown Address: 191.166.100.1 silvestro.com primary name server = josh-h916s4ro3q.silvestro.com responsible mail addr = hostmaster serial = 35 refresh = 900 (15 mins) retry = 600 (10 mins) expire = 86400 (1 day) default TTL = 3600 (1 hour) C:\Documents and Settings\JSilvestro> J.Silvestro

Hi Pelease confirm the server work well, such the service of the server. Run exbpa on the exchange server. Check the network between the servers, and client. Such as the interface configuration, and the firewall configuration. You'd better follow the procedure carefully as below: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123643(EXCHG.65).aspx Regards! gavin
