Exchange 2003 SP2 - Telnet returns a blank screen between 2 servers
Hi all, Yes i know its old but we are working on getting it upgraded. We have 2 Exchnage servers in our organisation that are having some trouble communicating. Our corporate server i9s sending email across a RGC to the remote site but the link is not connecting. When i run a telent session to the server on the first couple of attempts i get a blank screenthen it returns to the prompt. So far i've checked all the permissions on the SMTP connector and all looks perfectly ok. The sites are connected via a VPN tunnel on SonicWALL appliance, 4060 at the main site and 3060 on the remote site. All email is flowing correctly via any other means, both are working via the internet connector successfully. Would email work correclty if i remove the RGC connector and force it to use the Internet Mail Connector??? What other troubleshooting steps can i take to determine where the problem lies??? I'll be checking the firewall connections to see if it is blocking the connection for some reason, i have rules setup to allow access for SMTP delivery on both sides as well as an unrestricted rule to allow all traffic back and forth (setup by default).

If the two servers are in the same ORG, then you can't force the email over the Internet. Blank screen means something is blocking the connection, or the connection is failing due to a network issue. For example wrong default gateway, multiple default gateways etc. SMTP Connectors have nothing to do with inter-server traffic. The fact that internet traffic works correctly does tend to rule out the issue being with Exchange, it is more likely to be networking. Thanks Simon. I had a feeling i wouldn't be able to force it because of the org situation. Its been a long long time since i read the books and really should brush up on it. The firewall at the remote site started giving us issues when we updated the firmware a few months back, rolled back and it sorted its self. Maybe another bug has cropped up to cause concern. Thanks for getting back to me.
