Exchange 2003 SP2 - Recognize SCL Header Inserted by Gateway Server
I am using Postfix/Spamassassin as a spam-filtering gateway server which relays scanned messages to an Exchange 2003 SP2 back end server. Reading online in several places, it seems possible to insert specific headers into the message to let Exchange know what the SCL of the message should be based on the Spamassassin results. Looking around, I've seen several headers suggested as the "correct" one including "X-SCL: #", "X-Spam-SCL: #", and "X-MS-Exchange-Organization-SCL: #" (the last one appears to be correct for Exchange 2007), but adding any of these headers to messages destined for our Exchange 2003 server have no noticeable effect on the SCL rating assigned to the message. IMF v2 is enabled on the server, the SMTP virtual server is set to use IMF filtering, and the rule that moves mail with a high SCL rating to the Junk Mail folder is working. The only issue is getting Exchange to see the SCL rating assigned by Spamassassin. Unfortunately you cannot use headers with Custom Weight Filters (very frustrating) so that isn't an option either. This question is really a continuation of the one here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/af298668-df63-4566-bb99-1cfe85f85536 but since that one has been marked as answered, I thought I would ask this question in a new thread. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions. Nick

Hi,Sorry for the delay response.I understand that you are using Spamassassin as a spam-filtering which deployed in front of the Exchange 2003 server to filter the spam email. Since we are not familiar with the Spamassassin product, the help on this issue is limited. After researching on the website, I found below article is the instruction about how to deploy Spamassassin on the Exchange 2003:http://www.spamblogging.com/archives/000069.htmlHope that can help you.ThanksAllen

Hm, I replied earlier but my message seems to have been lost. Thanks for your reply. The issue I'm having really doesn't have anything to do directly with SpamAssassin. We have two physical machines, one acting as a gateway spam filter and one is our Exchange back-end that users connect to. All I'm trying to do is find a way for the gateway server to tell the Exchange server "Hey, I already scanned this message and you should mark it with an appropriate SCL value and deliver it to the user's Junk Email folder." It was indicated in the other thread (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/af298668-df63-4566-bb99-1cfe85f85536) that this is possible, so I'm trying to get that to work before looking at an event sink. The sink will probably work, but it feels kludgy enough that I'd really like to use the built-in functionality if at all possible. Thanks again! Nick

Hi,Thank you for your further clarifying.I understand that your issue. I have to say that is not possible. Please understand that the SCLproperty is not a header property actually andthe SCL valuesets on messages is transmittedin the SMTP session in the XECH50 Blob. That means the Exchange 2003 doesnt scan the message header for the SCL value. When the message reaches the Store it is changed to a MAPI property and from there the Store decides if the message should be moved to the junk mail folder or not.For your reference, please refer to the below link:http://www.eggheadcafe.com/aspnet_answers/Exchange2000development/May2006/post27195833.aspThanksAllen
