Exchange 2003 RUS in Excahnge 2003/2007/2010 Mixed environment
Hi All, I have a customer who has been running Exchange 2003 in 2 physical locations A and B, two Admin Groups, Two Routing Groups. In location A Exchange 2007 was installed, and all the users were moved to Exchange 2007. In location B Exchange 2003 is still running. The customer is trying to decommission Exchange 2003 Servers at location A. Exchange 2003 Servers were installed first in location A , and thus the Exchange 2003 RUS (Enterprise and Domain) are pointing to one of the Exchange 2003 Servers at Location A. Before decommissioning this Exchange server (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931/en-us ) we tried to move the RUS to the Exchange 2003 Server at location B. However when you select the Properties for the RUS, and try to change the Exchange Sever (or the DC as a matter of fact) the only type of objects you can select from are "Users and Other Objects". You cannot change the object type to Computers at all since it's missing from the interface. Consequently you cannot change the RUS properties for the DC and the Exchange server. I checked another environment where a mixture of Exchange 2003/2007/2010 versions still exists, and encountered the same issue. This used to work fine with Exchange 2003. I am wondering whether when Exchange 2007/2010 servers are installed changes are made so that the RUS can't be changed any more. An option will be to wait for the customer to upgrade Site B to Exchange 2007/2010, and then delete the RUS altogether, but they prefer to decomission the Exchange 2003 Servers from site A now. Any help and ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks, VaniaK

You could create a new RUS, connect it to a Location B server, and then remove the RUS in Location A. -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." . Thanks for the reply. I tried to create a new Domain RUS since you can have more than one Domain RUS (but limited to one for each DC) and the problem is the same - cannot select a computer object neither for the DC nor for the Exchange. That should not be a problem though since in my case the customer already has a second domain RUS for a DC at the second location. My concern is for the Enterprise RUS; it cannot be deleted (and I know it's not supposed to be deleted) and I have to transfer it. Is using ADSIEDIT my only option here?? Thanks.

Sorry, I don't know why it's grayed out. -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." .
