Exchange 2003 Messages Stuck Awaiting Directory Lookup Queue
Hi
We have been experiencing a random problem with our Exchange Server whereby messages remain in the awaiting directory lookup queue, and the only way I have been able to release the messages is to reboot the server.
The problem is very random and seems to occur every few few months for no apparent reason.
A couple of things I have noticed once the queues are stuck is that if I attempt to stop/restart the virtual SMTP connector to get the queues working Exchange hangs and also when it is in this state I am also unable to open IIS Manager when the queues are
in this state. Not sure if the IIS problem is related.
Does anyone have any idea as to what may be wrong?
I have been also looking to see if any patches were available for Exhange to ensure we were on the latest version, we are currently running Exchange Server 2003 Std (build 6.5.7638.1) and I have found Exchange build numbers here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/158530 which indicates the latest build is 6.5.7654.4
Does anyone know where I can find the latest version for download?
Thanks
Leo

Hi,
Please understand that messages accumulate in the “Messages awaiting directory lookup" queue because the advanced queuing engine cannot categorize the messages. You can increase diagnostic logging for the MSExchangeDSAccess and MSExchangeTransport
services to collect more information.
For more information, please refer to the below KB:

Hi Allen
Thanks for the info and links, I have increased diagnostics logging so hopefully I will be able to capture some useful info. Unfortunately I can't re-produce the problem and it occurs very randomly so it may be a while before I post back with any further
info.

Hi
I am still experiencing random problems with this and the last failure was at the start of Sep. I have increased logging and the logs actually look pretty clean but I do see the following 3 warnings generated by MSEXchangeDSAccess and LDAP which seem related
to the problems I am having
The following 3 events are all generated for Source: MSExchangeDSAccess, Category: LDAP, Event ID 2115, Type: Warning
Description: Process STORE.EXE (PID=4376). DSAccess needs to close a connection to the Domain Controller server.domain.local due to error 0x80040920.
Description: Process INETINFO.EXE (PID=1948). DSAccess needs to close a connection to the Domain Controller server.domain.local due to error 0x80040920.
Description: Process MAD.EXE (PID=2768). DSAccess needs to close a connection to the Domain Controller server.domain.localdue to error 0x80040920.
Any ideas?
