Exchange 2003 MDBData folder
Hi, Does anyone has any suggestions to how to clear the mdbdata folder on an Exchange 2003 server?? This folder keeps growing till it fills up the disk and the contents are not auto-deleted. I had checked out on this issue and found that it has something to do with the committing of the logs during backup but somehow, our veritas backup is not working on this at all. Perhaps someone can provide some suggestions to how to overcome the issue (not incline to use NTBackup on 2003 server). Can I shift the folder over to another drive? Many thanks, Tan

Hello Tan, Which type of backup you take normally? Only Full backup can purge the committed transaction logs and it is good to take full backup minimum once in a week or as per requirement. Check the backup log file for the completion of backup. Additionally you can see the information (event id 224) in event log of your Exchange server that log files have been deleted after completion of backup so make sure that backup software is purging logs after full backup. Yes, you can move the path of database and transaction logs. Go to the properties of any database -> Database tab -> change the path of edb and stm files and click OK but this operation requires to dismount the database during movement of files.

Hi Tan, You can refer to following KB to move Transaction log and database file: How to move Exchange databases and logs in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=821915 You can also refer to following KB to manually remove transaction log files that are not required How to remove Exchange Server transaction log files http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240145/ Nevertheless, I still suggest that you use NTbackup tool to perform full backup to check whether the transaction log can be purged. If the transaction log can be purged, it is a veritas backup tool issue and I suggest you contact Symantec for further assistance. If the transaction log still cannot be purged, we can go ahead and troubleshoot the Exchange issue. Mike
