Exchange 2003 Internal Routing problem - Mail only flows one way
I have just added a new exchange 2003 server to our organisation. I can send mail from the new server to the original one, but if i send from the original to the new server I get an NDR saying: There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <Oldmailserver #5.5.0 smtp;550-Invalid recipient What am I missing here?

The 1st thing I'd checkis the SMTP Virtual Server on the original server and make surethere's no smart host.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Sorry I'm new to all this exchange stuff. I do have a smart host configured on the old as we're using Messagelabs for our antivirus/antispam. Presumably this means all outbound mail will route though messagelabs even if destined for a mailbox on another of our servers?

Is the Messagelabs smarthost configured on an SMTP connector or on the SMTP virtual server of the original server? If so that is likely your issue.OliverOliver Moazzezi | Exchange MVP, MCSA:M, MCTS:Exchange 2010, BA (Hons) Anim | http://www.exchange2007.com | http://www.exchange2010.com | http://www.cobweb.com |

All mail will be sent to the smart host, not just the outbound stuff. To fix this, create a SMTP Connector and set it to use the smart host. Then remove the smart host from the SMTP Virtual Server.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Thanks Guys this was exactly the problem - whoever had deployed the original server had set the smarthost on both the SMTP connector and the virtual server, I have now removed it from the virtual server and resolved my issue. Thanks again for your help.Regards,
