Exchange 2003 Databases won't mount automatically. Event ID 9518 logged in App Log
HI all, Hoping someone may be able to help me out with this this one. Recently some Windows Server 2003 hotfixes hotfixes were applied to all of our Exchange 2003 servers but when one of the servers was rebooted all database stores wount not mount automatically. We were able to mount them manually. Event ID: 9518 was logged in the Application Log: The othher mail server did not have this issue at all. Error 0xfffffc01 starting Storage Group /DC=xx/DC=xx/DC=XXXX-XXXX/CN=Configuration/CN=Services/CN=Microsoft Exchange/CN=XXXX-XXXX/CN=Administrative Groups/CN=First Administrative Group/CN=Servers/CN=XXXXX/CN=InformationStore/CN=SGX on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. <NULL> and Error 0xfffffc01 starting Storage Group /DC=xx/DC=xx/DC=XXXXXXXXX/CN=Configuration/CN=Services/CN=Microsoft Exchange/CN=XXXXXXXX/CN=Administrative Groups/CN=First Administrative Group/CN=Servers/CN=XXXX/CN=InformationStore/CN=SGX on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. Storage Group - Initialization of Jet failed. We applied hot fix 930241 and this did not resolve the issue. Any ideas on what else I can look at? Thanks

Hi, Description of 0xfffffc01 is JET_errInvalidPath means Exchange is not able to find path of some data file. Check this article, this helps you. An MSExchangeIS 9518 event that has error code 0xfffffc01 occurs when you try to mount a mailbox or a public folder store

Thanks for the response. I haveseen this article befoore when I firstt started researching thi sissue and verfied all transcaction logs; system path, database and streaming database locations were correcton this server. The databases will mount manually but will not mount automatically when the server is rebooted.

Is it simply not starting or it is giving this 9518 error every time and not mounting after reboot? If it is not starting and as well as not giving any error then verify thatDo not mount this store at startup in Database tab on the properties of mailbox store in Exchange System Manager is not selected.

I had a similar issue after standing up a new Exchange server. After it was installed and configured everything was normal, once I move all the mailboxes over the trouble began. Each time the server restarted or a backup job completed the store would not mount. Turns out I forgot to set the registry value for the maximum database size and it was over the default limit of 18GB (Ex 2003 SP 2 Standard). Once I set the registry value the store behaved normally. The registry entry is not there by default and must be created. How to increase the Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 18-gigabyte database size limit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912375 Add or Modify the DWORDDatabase Size Limit in GB registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\<SERVER NAME>\Private-<GUID> Specify the maximum size in GB as a decimal value (not hexadecimal).

Dear customer: In order to better troubleshoot the issue, I want to confirm the following information with you: 1. Which version is your Exchange server 2003? Is it Standard or Enterprise version? 2. On Exchange server 2003, open Event Viewer, save application log file as .evt file, and sent it to v-rocwan@microsoft.com, 3. Do you install antivirus software on the Exchange server? If so, disable it, and check the effect. 4. Did you run eseutil.exe utility on the Exchange server before encounter the issue? 5. Start Exchange System Manager. 6. Expand Servers, and then expand the server on which you experience the problem. 7. Right-click the storage group that contains the store that cannot mount automatically, and then click Properties. On the General tab, send the screenshot of it to v-rocwan@microsoft.com. 8. Right-click StoreName (ServerName), and then click Properties. 9. Click the Database tab; send the screenshot of it to v-rocwan@microsoft.com. 10. On Exchange server 2003, run EXBPA tool, send the report to v-rocwan@microsoft.com, a) download this tool from the following link, and install it on Exchange server 2003, Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer v2.8 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=dbab201f-4bee-4943-ac22-e2ddbd258df3&displaylang=en b) Open EXBPA; c) Connect to Active Directory; d) Input the name of DC; make sure you are using Exchange Administrator account and Domain User account e) Click "Connect to the Active Directory Server" f) Select entire Organization as the Scan Scope, type "Health Check" g) Click "Start Scanning" h) When the scan finishes, Click "View a report" in the left pane and click the report in the right pane i) Click "Export report", select the type as XML (will save entire data file). j) Compress the XML and send it to v-rocwan@microsoft.com. Thanks for cooperation. If anything is unclear, please feel free to let us know. Rock Wang - MSFT

Thank you all for the replies. Just to answer some of the questions that have been asked. All thedatabases on this server won't mount automatically when the server is rebooted and Event ID 9518 gets logged in the Application Log, but they will mount manually."Do not mount this store at startup" is not checked. The Exchange server with the issue is Enterprise version, therefore it is not an issue with the maximum database size limit. Antigen SP1 is installed but no other antivirus software.Eseutil was not run on the server before the issue was encountered.Rock, I have sent you the logs you requuested. Thanks

Can you create an additional mailbox store on the server, perhaps add a bogus mailbox to it and test if the new store comes online automatically or if it inherits the problem?

I have no problem mounting the stores manually which is what I would have to do in order to test a new store with a test account. The problem occurs when we reboot the server and unfortunately I can't reboot these servers very often.

Hi Rock, Sorry about that. Files have been sent. Looking forward for you feedback. Thanks

Dear customer: I have checked the EXBPA log file; the error is not relevant to the issue that Databases won't mount automatically. Event 9518 is having hex code '0xfffffc01' - which in turn describes that database path is invalid or it is locked. From your application log file, I found 9175 event, which is a generic error. As when stores are dismounted System attendant tries to maintain the MAPI session and if it fails it will throw these events. Considering event 9518 it seems that after the reboot, DB's were locked by some process for some time as a result they were not mounted automatically. From your e-mail, you mentioned that you have install Antigen on Exchange server 2003, please verify that exchange directories are excluded from it. I suggested increasing diagnostic logging for MSExchangeIS to level 7 from ESM and reboot the server. If problem reoccurs we might have some good informational events. For more information about how to increase diagnostic logging for MSExchangeIS, please refer to the following documents: How to Collect Diagnostic Data to Help Troubleshoot Information Store Issues http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821912 Thanks for cooperation. Dear customer: How's everything going? Additionally, please check whether your Exchanges Server 2003s databases are stored on NAS device. If so, contact to your vendor and try to update NAS software to the newest version, and check the effect. Thanks for your time and cooperation. If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know. Rock Wang - MSFT

Helllo Kellie I think file is in use by some other process. Please download the Handle.exe from sysinternals.com website and run following syntax agains the .edb file Handle.exe "<Path of .Edb file\*.edb>" This is will give you which process it is holding this file in use. Kill that process and re-try by mounting it. I hope this works for you.
