Exchange 2003 Database limit defaults back to 18gb after remount & Information Store restart
I have an Exchange Server 2003 with SP2 server. Back in August 09, I added the registry key to increase the database size to 25Gb. I dismounted and remounted the mailbox as well as have restarted the server several times over the past several months. This week, our database size reached 18Gb and dismounted. Upon looking at the event logs, we received an event ID 1216 stating our databse had maxed out and dismounted. There was on event log that acknowledged the 25Gb datase increase but it defaulted back to 18Gb. I changed it to 35Gb today, dismounted and remounted but this was not recognized in the event log. Has anyone had an issue like this and how was it resolved? Thanks!

The database limit in Exchange 2003 Standard Edition is 16 Gb. The registry key modifying - is are temporary solution for upgrading to Enterprise edition. This is only tip, workaround. You cann't infinitely increase this limit by registry modifying. You may set random value in the registry, but system recognized only 18 Gb. This is real limit.Try use mdbview32 for connect directly to .edb file and remove some portion of data. Then try offline defragmentation of database. May be you safe your data.http://okrylov.wordpress.com

While I have no reason to doubt what you are saying, this sounds really strange. I have seen no Microsoft documentation stating this. On the contrary, for instance here:Licensed Database Size Limit Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition is limited to a single storage group with a single private information store database and a single public folder database. Prior to SP2, each database was limited to 16 GB of total physical size. SP2 increases the licensed database size limit for Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition from 16 GB to 75 GB; the default configured database size limit will be 18 GB. We found the problem. If you miss one little word in the registry key, it will not work. The word "in" was missed. Once added, all works. Thanks for looking into this to all.
