This has happened on several occasions now, when a try and go into the properities of a user using the AD Users and Computers snapin on our Exchange 2003 server the snapin crashes. This is logged in the application event log:
Faulting application maildsmx.dll, version 6.5.7638.1, stamp 430e738e, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.2.3790.3959, stamp 45d70aa5, debug? 0, fault address 0x0004215f.
Does anybody have any idea why this might be happening?

I've just come across
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946459
which fits with our network as we have a Windows Server 2008 forest and the exchange server is running on Windows Server 2003. I am going to try and apply it later (as it requires a restart) and see what happens.
