Exchange 2003 - how to attach a disconnected mailbox to another user account
Hi We are running Exchange 2003. Somehow we have a user with two mailboxes showing in the mailbox store. One is disconnected, and we would like to delete this one. (We don't need any of the contents). But attempting to purge the mailbox either by choosing purge in the Sytem Manager or by changing the retention policy to 0 and running the cleanup wizard have been tried with no success. The error message is "Failed to delete the mailbox of <mailbox name> with error 0x8004010f." One suggestion has been to connect to the mailbox to another user, and then open the mailbox and delete all the mail that way (or use Exmerge to copy the data out to a pst) and then hopefully Exchange will purge the empty mailbox. How do we connect the mailbox to another user? We created a test user that was not mail enabled for this purpose. But the attempt to attach the mailbox to the new user failed with the error message "this legacyExchangeDN value is already being used by <original user account>".

Looks like your AD is not in good shape. The AD attributes are not getting updated. Run exbpa and look for any issue. Ideally you should be able to purge mail boxes or reconnect any mail box to the users in AD.Raj

Add "Full Mailbox Directory Name" to the set of column headers in the "Mailbox" view of the mailbox database. Do both of those mailboxes have the same directory name? >One suggestion has been to connect to the mailbox to another user, and then open the mailbox and delete all the mail that way (or use Exmerge to copy the data out to a pst) and then hopefully Exchange will purge the empty mailbox. > >How do we connect the mailbox to another user? > >We created a test user that was not mail enabled for this purpose. Ahhh . . . okay, so they have the same legacyExchangeDN name. 1. Make careful note of the mailbox size and number of items for the two mailboxes. Remember which one is the one you want to keep. Jot down, or make screen shots of, the information each of the property pages for the user (you'll have to putsome of them back later). 2. Remove the mailbox from the "real" user. 3. Attach the mailbox you want to delete to that "test" user. 4. Attach the mailbox you want to keep to the "real" user. 5. Delete the "test" user 6. Restore the missing properties to the "real" user (e.g. any values in any Custom Attribute properties). 7. Select the "test" user's disconnected mailbox and purge it. Step #3 will change the legacyExchangeDN value assigned to the mailbox in the mailbox database. One the ambiguity is resolved you should be able to treat the mailboxes individually. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
