Exchange 2003 - Cannot Mount Mailbox Store After Offline Defragramentation
Hi, I ran an offline defrag against an exhcnage 2003 mailbox store last night which was successful. Due to no available diskspace, and the server being in a datacentre, I had to use a mapped drive to another location to do do. To avoid any issues, I ran the defrag with the /p switch with the intention of renaming the temp edb file and copying over the original priv1.edb file. I excluded the stm file. The above all went well but, after copying the defragged copy back over, the mailbox store would not mount. The event logs had the following error: Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeIS Event Category: General Event ID: 9519 Computer: SERVER Description: Error 0xfffffde4 starting database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SERVER)" on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. I've read Microsoft KB289079 article and checked the times which are different. Without stating the obvious, should I have defragged both the edb & stm files together? I only ask as I have defragged the edb file only in the past and remounted with no problems. I did copy the original edb file to a temp location in case there were any issues and that is i the process of being copied back.

Well, this is one of many reasons that offline defrags are not recommended and typically not needed. The .stm file should be automatically defragged along with the .edb. Once you get the original back in place, I guess the next question is why you are running a defrag in the first place. Can you bring up another server? What do you have in place for mailbox send/receive limits if you have limited disk space?

Did you check eseutil /mh for current DB status, You said you used /P switch also with defragg, It should be last action for DB repaire. Try to take backup of current DB and repaire defraggmented DB (eseutil /P) and mount it. As soon you are able to mount DB move users in other DB and recreate current DB. If /P switch is not able to repaire it, restore from the back up if you have any, Database is seems to be unrepairable Some more referenc's:: What to Do When an Exchange Store Won't Mount:: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996027(EXCHG.65).aspx XADM: You Cannot Mount Information Store Databases and You Receive "JET_errDbTimeTooOld" Error Message:: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329021 Anil

In that case , it doesnt do a repair, but rather keeps the temp file and doesnt overwrite the original store.
