Exchange 2003 (STD) inplace upgrade from Exchange 2000 (STD) on Windows 2000
Hi, I have attempted to do a standard inplace upgrade for the above system. Essentially, this box was upgraded from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 about two years ago. The setup fails with >>>>>>>>>> Setup encountered a fatal error during Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services of Upgrade component task. -- ID:62237 -- CBaseComponent:cSetup (f:\titanium\admin\src\udog\setupbase\basecomp\basecomp.cxx:1401) Does anyone have any ideas regarding this error? The upgrade steps are run and appear fine, it literally fails on the "Setup encountered a fatal error during Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services of Upgrade component task." The box is correctly service packed, and after the upgrade fails Exchange still works fine!! Below is the Exchange Server Setup log... truncated a little. Hi, Try to set all exchange services to manual start-up, reboot the server, stop all antivirus services and try to run the upgrade again. Leif

Hi Leif, I will try that after the bank holiday weekend. I was wonderig whether this issue might be DNS related (RPC Server is unavailable). netdiag reports this: DNS test . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Passed PASS - All the DNS entries for DC are registered on DNS server '192.168.0.10'. [WARNING] The DNS entries for this DC are not registered correctly on DNS server '131.227.100.12'. Please wait for 30 minutes for DNS server replication. [WARNING] The DNS entries for this DC are not registered correctly on DNS server '217.8.240.5'. Please wait for 30 minutes for DNS server replication. Thanks, Mike

Hi Leif, Tried as you suggested....no joy...BUT....i did notice that the NNTP service was bouncing during the install, so the service was restarted when it stopped and the install went through fine...The DNS errors reported with netdiag were fixed with a netdiag /fix and apart from SP2 causing a momentary panic (it hung for 30 seconds)...it all went fine. Thanks for all you help. #Mike
