Exchange 2003: is a domain required?
We have installed WIN SBS 2003 Premium includingExchange 2003. We are a smallcompany with 10 employees and currently run our internal systems in a workgroup. We also have an external site hostedin a data center which house our application servers and Website. We are looking to move our SBS Server with Exchange into our data centre. The questionsI have are: -Do we have to configure the SBS Server and Exchange on a domain? The SBS is currently setup to act as the PDC (local.<OurDomainname>),or can we connect internally from a workgrou to our external Exchange Server (through the Internet). - The ISP will issue us a PRT record for the server for reverse DNS lookup. -Essentially we would like our employess to remain in a workgroup and be able to connect to Exchange internally using the Outlook client or externally using OWA. Thank you.

Hi, The exchange server must run in a active directory domain but your clients don't need to -I do however find it easier to manage clients when they are in a domain. You can enforce policies, make sure that they are updated with hotfixes etc. You also need a file server somewhere to protect your files don't you (it is easier to assign permissions to this server if part of a domain?
