Exchange 07 HA to Exchange 13 HA Coexistence Migration

Hello,

We have an upcoming migration that i'm trying to plan for. My appologies in advance as I am new to this job/environment, i did not create this setup. I hope I've included all pertinent information.

Current Environment

Clustered

MBX01 - Exch 07 MB role (03 Enterprise)

MBX02 - Exch 07 MB role (03 Enterprise)

Not Clustered

CAS01 - Exch 07 CA role (03 Enterprise)

HUB01 - Exch 07 HT role (03 Enterprise)

UM01 - Exch 07 Um role (08 Standard SP2)

Lync

LYNC00 - Lync Server 2010 (08 R2 Standard) - IIS role

LYNCMON - Lync Server 2010 (08 R2 Standard)

Lync is integrated with exchange, though I can honestly say i'm not exactly sure what services each of those servers are providing. I believe LYNC00 is the 'main' out of the two.

Target Environment

EX01 - (Server 12 R2 Standard)

EX02 - (Server 12 R2 Standard)

Short version (from what i understand) : current environment is 07 exchange, high availability with Lync. new environment is a pair of 2012 servers, that will need to be exchange 2013 High Availability and Lync Integration. These will need to be run in Coexistence mode initially. I believe there are about 650 accounts, no public folders, 50ish calendars.

I've referenced two books (Mastering Exchange 2013, and Pro Exchange Server 2013 Administration), researched the best i can online. However; Coexistence, HA, and the migration itself are all new to me. I'm familiar with the install and setup of one exchange server, and all of the administration that is done with an exchange server, but not so much with the new environment that I am now in. What would be the best way to go about this?  I need to create a plan for this migration, and then naturally use said plan to perform the actual migration. I may indeed have all of the information i need, but i do not feel all that confident in creating a plan for something i'm not very familiar with, then implementing that 'best guess' of a plan.

any advice is appreciated :)

Hi Murkydurky,

Thank you for your question.

Exchange 2013 is more convenient for us to management. When we migrate Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013, we will have coexistence for us to management and refer to the links which you offered.

Its important for you to be familiar with Exchange 2013, then migration will be done very well.

We could also refer to the following steps to migrate Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj898581(v=exchg.150).aspx

In addition about Lync migration, we suggest you post case to Lync forum by the following link:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/home?category=ocs

If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.

Best Regard,

Jim

Hi jim-xu,

Thank you for your response, and additional links! I have a plan somewhat coming together, but any information is useful. I'm hoping maybe someone else out there has done this type of migration, and has a plan they could share (hey i can hope right? :-D).

I will defer my Lync question to the Lync forums.

When we do this migration, i will post a plan of what worked properly for this setup, should someone find themselves in my shoes .

Thanks in advance!
